Have any of you that have undertaken fundraising campaigns recently, either for capital improvements, restorations, or operating needs, used a "professional fundraising counsel" or organization? We are in the early discussions of a campaign here and have been approached by a number of such organizations. Anyone have a history working with such companies - Ketchum, etc etc.

Thanks

I highly recommend a book, Hands-On Fundraising by Edles. It is a good read, a bit technologically outdated, but the section on fundraising myths is great! If you use a service, get lots and lots of references before signing anything.

Scott,

I have had two experiences with professional fundraisers and both were very good. The first was with a local professional person who did a case study for my employer as the first step in the process. The organization did not go forward with our plans for a variety of reasons, but her work was very informative.

In the second instance we raised almost $500,000 at church for an elevator project. We interviewed several firms, including Ketchum, and decided on someone from a church-based agency. The decision was based on "fit" of the personalities involved. We paid a fee of about $25,000 for his services and it was worth every penny.

The real benefit to a professional is their ability to help you frame your case study, and then go after major leadership gifts.

Good luck as you go forward.

Wesley
