Rahway Valley 15 at Keene, New Hampshire, where it first ran for Nelson Blount, on his Monadnock Northern (the B&M Cheshire line between Keene and Bellows Falls, Vermont):

Hi Steve

The reason why Rahway Valley # 15 has outside admission valves is this,

she was build with Walschaert valve gear and slide valves,,in 1926 a

hostler, allowed the engine too freeze one night,,and the ice broke,,the

bridges..The Oneida & Western shipped the engine back too Baldwin's

Eddystone shops for repairs,,,for some unknown reason the engine

was fitted with, new cylinders ,new piston valves,,employing outside

admission too avoid altering the valve gear...

The outside steam pipes made the O&W # 20 a uniquue engine,,at the

same time Baldwin also fitted the engine with a Franklin type B power

reverse,,and mechanical lubricator,,as well as new plot,,headlight,,etc,

while at Baldwin... hope this of help,,,Pat...
