I think this was SP's only RDC, usually used on the Northwestern Pacific. The caption says Oakland 1959, but the live steamer in the background leads me to believe it was a bit earlier. The only SP steam I know of to have operated in 1959 was the narrow gauge 9, plus a 2-8-0 used as a boiler at Sacramento, and another 2-8-0 on the short subsidiary that ran from Arizona into Mexico. The RDC was made single-ended after a collision with a truck. It operated for a time on the Oregon Pacific & Eastern and was at Galveston last I knew.

That's correct Bob; still at the Galveston museum in its single-ended configuration. I have a picture of it as does John Bowers, but mine are not online at this time.

Of course there is a second SP 10, a 1880 narrow gauge boxcar preserved at Ardenwood Farm.

The car is complete except for brake beams (with patern work completed to cast new brake heads and shoes) With its restoration nearly funded. We are delaying work until it can be moved into our new car house.

The committee just completed the plan submittal packet. Because the building will be in a County operated, City owned park the permit process has be complicated. We expect a building permit by late June.

Over the last several months we have taken delivery of the reproduction harp switch stands, head blocks, bridles switch ties and such for the 5 switches for the project.

Everything takes more time than expected... It gets a bit frustrating.

Thanks Randy. I was part of a group you showed around about 5 years ago after the first Thomas event in Sacramento. Seems like 5 years or so is the magic number, took about that long to get the Conservation & Restoration Center facility built in Snoqualmie, WA.

SP had these two different "10" at the same time period. Back in the 1920s and 30s the SP narrow gauge alone had four #1 at the same time:

steam locomotive #1
coach #1
caboose #1
derrick #MW1 (along with "relief" train cars MW- 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D)

Must have kept the accountants on their toes. Among the NCO accounting records at CSRM I saw a journal entry correcting charges between passenger car "Madeline" and the station building at Madeline.
