 Post subject: Shay Question (With Picture)

Mr. Hsieh Ming Hsiu has been kind enough to contribute several photos of steam locomotives in Taiwan to www.steamlocomotive.info. One of them, a photo of Alishan Forest Railway No. 25, a two-truck, 30" gauge Shay has raised a couple of questions in my mind. Please see the image below:

What is the large tank, mounted transversely, behind the smokestack? And secondly, the stack seems very large compared to the locomotive. Is this original equipment?

Has Nigel been to Taiwan?

Looks like a Lempor or other modern retrofit combined with a feedwater heater. I'd sure like to know more about it.

the tank may be part of a feedwater heater(?)

that stack does nothing for that tiny headlight...
