Note the number of preserved CP diesel (and steam) locos stored at the CP Calgary Backshop (operated by ALSTOM).

http://locopage.fotopic.net/c1313828_121.html

The TrainMaster appears to have been freshly painted.

Can anyone explain what these locomotives are doing here ?

Dave

Of course the steam locomotive, 2816, needs no explanation.

The two Fairbanks Morris locomotives are (or were) privately owned by a gentlemen out of Ottawa. They have been stored at Alstom for several years.

The FP7, #1400, was used on the Royal Canadian Pacific up until two or three years ago, but it is now stored unserviceable. The 'B' unit #1900 has the same fate.

#8000 is a Baldwin and was part of the Canadian Pacific Heritage Collection, but it has been sitting outside rotting for a number of years now. However, it was just recently donated to the West Coast Rail Association in Squamish B.C. I'm not sure if it has been moved there yet or not.

I am not familiar with the numbering in the series, but I knew of the preserved C-Liner. I suspect that is an H16-66, rather than a second Trainmaster, as indicated. If it is a genuine Trainmaster, wouldn't that be a coup!

The FM C-C unit lettered CP 7009 was never a CP loco and it's not an FM "Trainmaster." It is the former Alcoa (Squaw Creek Coal Co.) H16-66 number 721001 from the private coal line in southern Indiana. 7009 is a number in CP's "demonstrator" series. Sure it looks nice, but I have a distinct preference for locos displayed for what they really were. But it's someone else's toy, and they write the rules for their stuff.

Dave

Ya got me !!!!
Right off the bat, the lack of one cooling fan and radiator section should have been an obvious tip-off and...

it is a well known fact that the only preserved TM 'lives' at the CRHA Museum in Delson.

Oh well

Dave

Kinda off topic, but kinda on.....

Isn't there a current NS slug and/or calf unit that is rolling around on FM trucks?

I believe that the Reading Historical Society has an ex-Trainmaster slug. Whether or not it is on its original trucks, I do not know.

RDG Tech has a TM slug with original trucks. I saw it less than a month ago at the Reading and Northern Temple Station stored with some of their other equipment.

VMT has a TM slug also, although it is currently stored off site.

Just dug up this link with a few pics:

http://rypn.sunserver.com/webbbs/index.php?read=97738

For those of us (myself, for instance) who never got to see an FM up close, how much of the slug is/are remnants of the FM? Same grab irons? Same Walkway? Stairs? (The trucks are obvious.)

This is a little off the subject, but in case any FM fans are interested we have 3 FM H12-44's at our museum.
We once used them as main power until we aquired some SW8s.

You can see pics of them on our website:

To build these slugs, everything above the walkway level was 'cleaned off.' In other words, the handrails, walkway, stairs, etc are all consistent with-if not actually part of the original locomotive.

One of the factors that influenced the slug design was the fact that FM used ready-mix concrete for ballast.

Yes...a good start towards a full-sized TM replica.

What is the operational status of the FM TrainMaster at Delson? I recall seeing it about ten years ago; it was stored indoors and appears to be complete.

I understand it to be complete, but inoperable at this time.
And a reminder to all that the Museum of Science in Ottawa, has the only other FM C-Liner in storage, under cover, but in very rough shape, though the PM is intact.
