Another one of those ugly/beautiful shop switchers! I believe this was originally Soo Line #321, a B class 0-6-0 with tender. Anyone have any recent photos of the engine? Were attempts made to restore her to her appearance as an 0-6-0, or does she still look like the subject photo?

I have no other pictures to share and have not seen this loco for some time. Back in about 1978 or so Mid Continent member Dave Wantz and I were on our way to do some repairs on the Cadilac and Lake City snow plow that was parked in Kewaunee, Wi {held up by car inspector}. On the way there we stopped in the now long gone C&NW roundhouse in Manitowoc, Wi where this engine was being cosmetically restored by a group there. They sandblasted most of the engine and painted it. We were concerned about mechanical preservation, but the attitude was that it was going into a mall for display and it would never get the chance to run again. It wasn't our engine and we had no say in what they were doing so we let it go, but both Dave and I were concerned about the sandblasting in relation to any moving parts.

Unless I am confusing this engine with something else, it was not restored back to a tender engine, at least at that time. I have no idea where or what condition the locomotive is in now. Personally I think it is a great example as is, but to each his own. Cheers, JOhn.

THanks for the picture. I don't live all that far from Manitowoc, I will have to make a point to go see it. There is a WW2 submarine museum there too. Don't remember the subs name but it is a combat vet that I would like to go see as well. Cheers, John.

May I suggest that a large can painted black with a plexiglas disk on the open end and mounted on the headlight platform, might make this engine look a little better.

The Minnesota Transportation Museum Minnegazzette published a story maybe 10 years ago about this engine's salvation and restoration. It is really amazing it is where it is once you read the story.
