Hi,

There is an add on Railswap.org for two B&LE f units. Are these the same ones? There is also and add for another F-unit.

Stuart

ps I'm in no way connected with Railswap, I just like to see what's for sale.

Kevin,

They used to have a website advertising the two units that they owned, but I can't seem to find it.

What happend to the other two that NJT sold? One was the IC 4020 and the one in Ohio is IC 4033 (I think) and there was another one, but I don't know the number. One went to Georgia (New Georgia RR maybe?) but I don't know what happened to it.

Stuart,

Can you be a sweety and post a link to this? I wouldn't even begin to know how to find my way there. I'm great at mechanics but know diddly about computers.By the way, as to some of the above posts. I would never argue the value of a steam locomotive. They are irreplacable. My only point is that we save now what could be cut up before it's too late. E units are more rare than F units. But we aren't arguing the value of Es over Fs or steam over diesel. I'm only trying to save some relics from the scrapper. As to what is where , Stuart, I hope I'm not stating the obvious to you, you probably know about this but if you don't, have you looked for the engines you're talking about on Andrew Toppan's list? I'll gladly send you directions how to get there, I keep a printout of it in a looseleaf so I can track engines. (Doggone it's cost me a lot of printer ink.) Anyway, thanks for notifying me about this and if you can help me find this link that would be great. As for the Roanoke engines,if I can be of any help, let me know. What has happened here shouldn't be made worse in the case of these or any other locomotive.By the way, guys, Diesels may be cookie cutters to some of you but to some of us they are our childhood, I'd like to pass them on to my daughters.

Angie, just go to the links section and hit Preservation Resources. That will list Railswap and other equipment dealers.

Post subject: Lack of E- Units
PostPosted: Mon Jan 14, 2002 5:05 pm

Yup, there is just an ABUNDANCE of E's out there.
I'm SO sick of hearing that. Just so we get to the bottom of this, ponder what is ACTUALLY left:

E-1- 1 unit
E-2- None (was there actually E2's, though?)
E-3- 1 unit
E-4- None
E-5- 1 Unit
E-6- 2 Units*
E-7- 1 unit*

My numbers might be off on the E-6's, but I think I'm right. *These two in particular are the ones that make me sick, as from what I understand, there were at least four E-7's as late as 1989 (three A's and the last B). E7 5901 is the last example of a breed that, yes, sealled the death knell for steam power, but are we really all so close-minded as to damn ourselves to future generations just because those of us (an no, I am not among them I realize) who were alive when it was happening want some sort of sick retrobution?
Yes, there are a few E-8's and a fair number of E9's left, but the better question is: how many are preserved? Look, I love steam as much as the next guy, I just bristle when someone tells me that an e-unit doesn't matter.

And yes, I do belive that future generations will blame those of us who didn't save a Seaboard E4 as much as we blame people for not saving an NYC 4-6-4.

By the way, there is exactly one FT A & B unit preserved. The rumors about the NP FT's in Mexico persist, but I haven't seen anything recently to say they are saved. There aren't a whole lot of F3's either.

Maybe its generational, but the Southern FP7, E8 and especially that cool bulldog nose one the ACL unit got me going almost as much as the steam power offerred for our enjoyment at ARM/ TRAIN 2001.

'nuff said,

If I remember correctly, the E-2s were the CNW/UP/SP bulbous nosed units, bought by the SP after the "City of SF (LA?)", and later rebuilt into a later series E unit.

A dentist in the Spokane area has an E7 with a passenger car that's being used as his Dentist office. Former PRR I think.

Smokebox-

If this is true, he has the only other E7, still pretty sad IMHO. Doubly so in that if it is PRR, the only two units are both PRR! In either case, is there a photo out there of this "new" E7 so we could get it nailed down? In everything I have read, 5901 was the only one.

The dentist that I believe was being refered to, was featured on "Tracks Ahead" when Spencer Christian was hosting it. He has the nose section of a BN F9, along with a passenger car in his basement. Actually placed them down there prior to construction. It was quite an impressive basement, and he purchased the pieces from a local scrap yard. The biggest reason that we don't have any E-7's or earlier is that Amtrak refused to take any units older than E-8's. The railroads then offloaded their old e-units on the new passenger road, and quickly scrapped the ballance of the earlier e-units.
