The photograph was taken inside the Staveley Iron Works which was only a few hundred yards from its present location inside the roundhouse at the former Staveley Barrow Hill depot.

BR had inherited a contract to shunt (switch) the companies tracks which had originally been agreed by the Midland Railway. 41708 was one of a number of ex Midland relics which did the job. Shortly after the picture was taken they were replaced by diesels but the locos were not withdrawn until 1967 when the contract was legally terminated.

After purchase for preservation 41708 first went to the Worth Valley - running hot more than once en route.
