Post subject: Carlin, NV Roundhouse goes down.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2002 1:51 am

One of the last remaining structures in the SP (now UP) Carlin, NV yard has gone. Locally the structure was known as "the roundhouse". But by the looks the structure it as most likely a 2 or 3 stall enginehouse.

I belive that SP had a similar enginehouse in Dunsmir, CA. These structures were built when the cab-foreward Mallets could not fit the turntables of roundhouses in some yards. Could the Carlin structure have been one of these?

On a happy note, UP donated the bricks from the turn down building to the local high schoo to build pottery kilns. The school's mascot is called the Carlin "Railroaders", aptly enough for this old railroad town.

As of about two mo. ago, Indio, Ca. Engine House was still standing. Indio never had a roundhouse but used a wye on the north side of the tracks mainly to turn ACs' and othrr power.

Actually, what was left at Carlin was more of the back shop than the roundhouse. The turntable went out a number of years ago.

Used to be quite a place...
