According to the 1976 and 1978/79 Passenger Car Annuals, here is the car's history:

C&O Family Coach 1701, built by Budd in 1948
C&EI 606
L&N 2802
Amtrak 8382
Amtrak 3365

The 1984 edition of the Passenger Car Annual says the car was sold to Cuppery & DeYoung in 1983.

Here is some additional information from Wayner's Amtrak Car Spotters Guides published in 1972 and 1973...

C&O 1701 was a counter-lounge car built by Budd in 1948 as a family-coach for the Chessie train that was never placed in service; rebuilt by C&EI to tavern-lounge car Magnolia Gardens in 1951 and rebuilt again by C&EI to counter-lounge car Harvest Inn in 1965.

This car's C&EI heritage makes this a rather significant loss -- as there are no C&EI passenger cars in preservation - inspite of this road's rather significant role as a north-south link.

I agree. Another serious loss was a C&EI heavyweight which was originally a wood car, later steel sheathed. This car was privately owned I believe and eventually given to the museum where it was located; Monticello Railway Museum. MRM determined that the car had deteriorated to the point that a restoration was impossible and the car was destroyed.

I can see DOZENS of parts I could use on the Silver Hostel and Silver Lodge. And they look to be just shoved into a trash pile.

Ah, man. It sucks that a C&EI car is getting cut up and compounded by the fact that the scrapping will go to waste.

The labor for three guys to cut this car up rather than use a bucket to just crush it makes less sense than scrapping it in the first place.

The Museum of Transportation in St. Louis has C&EI heavyweight coach no. 405. It was originally built for the Lehigh Valley.

I forgot about that car. Do you happen to know its present condition? Is it on display?

I would be very interested in seeing Current/recent Photos of C&EI 405 and other passenger cars at MOT. I have seen very few on the web or elsewhere.

The last time I looked (only the exterior) to coach was in fairly good condition, It is stored under roof, but not on display.
The way many of our passenger cars are displayed, makes it tough to get good photos. They are lined up on tracks in the Roberts Building like thet would be spotted in a train shed.
The area has high level platforms to accomodate disabled folks, so the running gear is obscured.
Periodic guided tours are run through the cars, otherwise they are locked up.
Some years ago, a fellow was caught trying to steal a wash basin out of one of the cars. He had tools so it was obvious what his intent was.
The way the cars are arranged makes it look like the rear end of the tracks at Union Station years ago.
