No website as of yet but possibly in the future. I do have many pics taken of her this past winter Let me know what you need.
Thanks K5Ahudson I can see where the compressor is now. It hangs low beside the 3rd driver correct?

LPS3 is good, but it's far from cheap. We started using sae 40 non-detergent motor oil for journals and the like. Around here we buy it by the gallon or 5 gallon pail at the farm store. If a part already has a coat of oil on it, don't use anything to remove the coating. Just add some non-detergent on top so it stays sealed.

As for welding, don't be afraid to do it on rough surfaces. It can be ground down. They welded these engines back together all the time in service. We will usually weld nuts on bolts, when possible. If it's removeable, someone will steal it.

Here's an online photoset. This shot is the compressor

As far as maintenance, what was historically done to engines of this type? I'm not a steam guy, but it seems like lubricating it as if it were operating shouldn't be bad for it. The evidence of periodic lubrication will tell people it's cared for, as well as tell a bit of a story.

Looking at the photo series, it's remarkable how well preserved and intact this locomotive is! Honestly, 6069 deserves to be moved into an indoor facility and rebuilt for operation. Amazingly beautiful piece of pure CNR machinery!

Well, the city doesn't have the money to put it into a building right now.....grant money available....? Nice set of photo's! Saves me from posting mine up! No really she is in pretty amazing shape really considering her total lack of maintenence since she was installed. She did have a paint job done back in about 2003 or so. It has held up pretty good over the years but as you can tell by the pics, moss is forcing out the metal beside the walkway. Her cab is pretty intact but I need to find out who took the whistle off as it is capped with a proper fitting plate.

Dave do you still need photo's?

Just a point to make also here about 6069, we are activly seeking volunteers to help with her care. Interested parties can email me.

She doesn't look too bad. I am not familiar with the differences from USA boiler code vs. Canadian boiler code. The boiler will be the show stopper...

I saw the SP&S 539 in Williams, Arizona last summer. She had dried out moss all over the boiler and running gear. The moss doesn't scare me too bad. I am guessing that she still has her asbestos under the jacket?

Lubricate as much as you can on her. That will make her eventual disassembly easier. This also would help make a move from her current location easier. If it were me, I would pull the reversing valve off of the compressor and get some oil in it. Oil the power reversing gear. Oil the link and block on the valve gear. Find all off the grease fitting and pump them full or grease. Get some oil on the shoes and wedges. Oil the spring rigging, and equalizing beams, etc. She has a lot of moving parts. Get as many of them as you can...

For stuff like the compressor and seized bolts, we are using Kroil. It is made by Kano Laboratories. http://www.kanolabs.com/google/

It has worked well for us and another steam adventure I was part of many moons ago.

I would use whatever viscosity of oil that CN used for shoes, wedges and other parts. Do you have access to the maintenance standards that CN used? For example, ATSF had what they referred to as the Locomotive Folio. It was their maintenance standards for their steam power. I would be willing to bet that CN had a similar guide. This would spell out the type and grade of oils and grease that should be used. Check around to see what you can find...

Ok its on the board next week for a meetup and walkaround of the locomtive. Yes she does still have some asbestos under the jacket but alot of it was removed back when she was spruced up and painted about 5 years ago.
I was down there today and there are alot of places that one could oil. First off is going to be the axle boxes as most of them have rocks inside that need to be removed and then the interior cleaned and oiled up.
I am in touch with an engineer on an operation train 6060 and he advised me on the compressor. That will be a job in itself!

It would be an air line, not a cable.

Really? I thought it was a cable. I noticed yesterday that there was no sign how the bell is rang due to the line or cable being missing.

What impressed me about the photos is where there was no paint to start with (friction areas, valve stems, lever mating surfaces etc) it was not painted over. Tells me the folks doing the repaint back when actually knew and cared for this engine.
