Yes You are right they did a good job! However most areas now the paint is cracking and lifting with rust showing undeneath.

There should be an air line, maybe 1/4 - 3/8" in diameter. going from the top of the bell directly back to the cab. The bell is usually turned on and off by means of a tap. It looks very similar to a regular outside garden tap for water. The larger and more modern engines usually did not have a cable or rope to ring the bell manually.

I would hope so! I can't see the engineer climbing outside while going 80 miles per hours just to ring the bell. ;)

I bet it doesn't. The bell itself does not move. The ringer does. Here is a shot 6060 taken in Hinton, Alberta in 2001. You can clearly see the air line. No rope or cable.

However, if the Mountains are like the CNR Hudsons which have a lot of similarities, there is a rope backup for the whistle if the air valve breaks down.

I could not see any sign of the pipe t the bell but I think the pipe was broken off at some point. There is about a 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch pipe broken off a little ways back from the bell. When we get access to the cab I will find out more of whats missing. I am thinking it would be neat if and when we get open days to have the bell connected up

It would be stolen again if it were put back out while in the park. You might find a way to fabricate a look a like while she is still in the park...

Fabricate a duplicate out of steel. Clearly mark it as a fake and nobody in their right mind would go to the effort to steal it. That is unless there are neighbors who get tired of hearing the whistle blow and the bell ring. There always seems to be someone with and incentive to steal these sort of things.

Hmm well there wouldnt be too many complaints but on second thought there is a spa located witin 200 feet or so of the train.

Just an update as I have been rereading this thread. There s defiantely no cable for the bell but the one for the whistle is still fitted. When the whistle was removed, so was the viloco valve for it and the valve was stored in the cab.

How about a general update on the progress (or lack of) in your noble effort? You might give it to us in two sections: The politic and council report, and the physical/mechanical report. I would love to see progress on this project when other find ways in which to stymie the best of efforts.
Project 6167 is another effort with some guts as well as glory!
