A GE drawing that I have, detailing E-60 MU connections, shows that all of the 27 wires have roughly the same function on both diesel and electric, but with one glaring exception. If you energize wire 16 (fuel pump) on the diesel, it drops the pan! Something tells me that GE didn't want mixed diesel and electric lashups.
If energizing wire 16 turns off the fuel pump and lowers the pan, as the engine might be, then it is functioning as the Shut Down wire, and is useful for a mixed Electric/Diesel-electric consist.

The 16 wire does not control MU shutdown on a diesel locomotive.

Depending on the vintage and builder, 16 is designated either as fuel pump or engine run. 3 is DV on a Woodward governor, or ESR4 on a GE governor, and by itself shuts down MUed diesels.

I think what EDM said was, that when you energized the fuel pump switch on the control stand of a diesel, the Pantograph would drop on the leading electirc(s), rendering the electric dead, or vice versa, when you raised the pantograph the fuel pump on the trailing diesel(s) would shut off, thus shutting down the diesel, preventing them from operating simultaneously in MU, for whatever reasons.

Steve,

In addition to the answers already posted. How about the UP 3985?

If you want to see a huge steam locomotive, then go see that one in steam! I have seen her at a couple of the California State Railroad Museum's Railfairs and that loco is reallly something to see!

There is really two steam locomotives there and they do make a person feel like a midget standing next to her! Go see her!

I honestly wonder what the appeal of watching a dead GG1 being shoved along by a Diesel would be. The GG1's were large and had a unique sound as they cruised - and they cruised - under wire. I think the money to execute such a project could be better used to effect a positive outcome for another restoration program.

The transformer's gone, right? Could you put a diesel in its location which generates the same AC voltage and frequency as the output stage of the transformer? Muffle the engine real well, and run all those auxiliary systems as designed.

I'd imagine you'd have to cut out all but a few traction motors so you didn't overwhelm the diesel... but it could move...
