OMR=Ozarkmountain Railcar, an online equipment dealer.

SMS = SMS Railservices a shortline in South New Jersey that uses Baldwin/Baldwin Lima Hamilton products in revenue freight services.

I doubt it, they have their plate full!

I'm sure they have their plates full, but BLW/BLH parts are hard to get.

Somebody wanted these carcasses.

I heard the Baldwins were sold for scrap!

44 was a Sharon Steel unit that was used at the Lowellville, OH works. Probably the last surviving piece of equipment from that mill.

Anyone remember the old REO Speedwagon song that features the lyric "Heard it friend who, heard it from a friend who, heard it from another..."

What a surprise to hear from a guy who runs a site devoted to the history of Baldwin diesels, asking to use some of the photos in Olin's linked message. Where had he seen them? RYPN. Heck I had all but forgotten this forum, much less remembered I still had an active account! I had posted this Picassa album to a Historical Sierra Railway forum (that I moderate) and a few others, and I guess the link made it around the web! And it turns out it was posted by my old Sierra friend from across Oakdale, Olin!

Anyway, living less than a mile from the Sierra property, I felt it was my duty to capture the demolition amid the very sad messages that were coming through the Sierra forum. Some of you out there who know me, also know that I have a "history" with the Sierra, so there was a certain element of risk involved.

Not out there near the "wrecking yard" five minutes when the road master came flying in to chase me off the property, threatening to have me arrested for trespassing. I suggested that he "go ahead and do it", as I also heeded the warning. Five days later and I am still at large!

But I got what may be among the few last photos of the Sierra Baldwins 40 and 44. I am not as sentimental about these locomotives as some are, but I do appreciate their place in history. And I hope -- perhaps against all hope -- the remaining Baldwin will find its way to the other end of the track at Railtown to be preserved as part of the rich Sierra history.

Everyone is all upset about these units being cut up. They were for sale for a long time did anyone ever think perhaps they should write a check to save them?

As I recall, their price went down to 17.5K. Now you are dealing with two locos that are out of service since '95 and were probably "picked over but good". It would be even more to transport them. I can't think of a museum that has extra money now-most have a tough time keeping after what they have already.

Moreover, it wasn't even clear that they had any potential to be returned to service (feasibily) or to serve as parts mules.

Basically, there's one place that has an active fleet of Baldwin diesels.
We can assume that they found no value in them.

Ultimately, no piece of equipment surives ad infinitum without providing value to its owners. The last resort is scrap. Its becoming less of a last resort with soaring global demand and a fallen and falling dollar.

You can't save everything, its an ugly fact.
