Hi. I am a new member. I am a volunteer at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. I am looking for paint / lettering diagrams for 2 NKP 40' boxcars at the museum. The cars are # 15797 & #15979. I have most of the lettering, and have most of the stencels made but I need the load limit info, capacity etc... as well as inside height, width etc... I would really like to get some of the museums rolling stock painted this year. I haven't really looked around too much, I plan on getting in touch with some of the NKP groups. Thanks in advance for ant help.

Some additional information to Todd's posting. Both cars were built in 1937 by General American Car to an Association of American Railroads design. NKP 15797 carried this number all of its life and was donated to HVRM by the late William Vogel of Orland Park, Illinois in May of 1994. Sister car NKP #15979 on the other hand, was repainted as Norfolk & Western #556001 and was assigned to MofW service by the N&W. In August and September of 1989, Norfolk Southern donated 6 cars, including the 556001 (NKP 15979), to the museum.

I think most of the data you are looking for can be found by searching back through the ORER otherwise known as the REGISTER. Fans and rail libraries have various volumes for inspection, and some issues have been produced on a compact disk and available for purchase.

Todd,

Email me offlist at rbreyer @ cesinfo.com , and I'll pass you the diagram page and dimensional stencilling information for these cars. I don't currently have a general stenciling plan for a NKP boxcar, but I know people who do, and I'll put you in touch with them (or, just letter over the existing lettering; I was at North Judson last year, and most if it is completely visible on 19797).

And never rely on the ORER listings if you can help it; I've yet to see one that wasn't completely riddled with errors.

Regards,

Ray Breyer
