There should be lagging (asbestos) under the dome unless it was already removed.

I just saw John's answer. Thank you.

My feeling was: I'd hate to try to replicate the sheet metal covering of the steam dome if I didn't have to. It's in pretty good shape.

Then again I'd really hate to leave any asbestos at all on the locomotive. It's been such a pain in the rear end.

Do either of you or anyone else know if the sheet metal covering of the steam dome might come off in one piece?

Thanks, Mike

Every steam dome cover I have had was designed to be removed in one piece, even if that piece was a fabrication of base, sleeve and top. I did have a rusted through sleeve seperate from the base on one, just removed it in two bits and zapped on a new sleeve. The sides of the dome were if not are covered with insulation, but the base might have sat on the boiler itself if it was a heavy casting. If it is formed sheet metal, the boiler was probably insulated right up the sides of the dome and the dome cover sits on the jacket.

After assuring no brackets retain the cover, a couple husky guys should be able to lift it.

Jeff -

Here is a "Ted Rose painting" of the 938 sitting at IRM:

NOW, here is the photo it was made from:

When I first saw the "painting", I thought that it was the real thing! Then I saw the disclaimer below it. It's remarkable. But I'm sure that Mr. Rose would have used his artists liscense to change some things that Mr. Merton couldn't change.

just wanted to post an update to the 905's asbestos removal. Actual removal goes much faster than the setup did. The bulk of the asbestos was completed Friday, 03/14. Today they are still vacuuming and brushing the microfibers from the boiler. (or as many as they can.) They opened up the cab and began work there today, Tuesday, 03/18. I went in and photographed. I should have those up by midday tomorrow at:
