The New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railway, one of the more excursion friendly companies has taken an abrupt turn. A bracket of trips, running next weekend for a community event, is reported to be the last. This is after a bit more then six months after the passing of Mr. Walter Rich. All of their passenger equipment and DO's first engine, an ex VBR 0-6-0 that has not steamed in more than thirty years, is for sale.

Some nice equipment there!

So what about Chinese 2-8-2 142? Does the NYS&W no longer own it?

The NS&W T&HS has owned or at least had 142 for awhile now. Don't know the full details, but she's been running trips on the Bel-Del. Last NY&W trip for her was 2004 for the 150th anniversary of the Syracuse Branch, my home time railroad.

The 599 "Office Car" appears to be the same type of 1905 CV wood coach as the land locked one we discussed a couple months ago.

Yes the 599 is an ex-CV car. I don't remember how they got it, but it has been on the property since at least the mid-80's. It has been in Rochelle Park, NJ for a number of years serving as office space for the NYS&W's Southern Division.

I also see they are selling the ex-Rahway Valley car that was used as an office after the station fire in Kenilworth, NJ and is now used as office space in Cooperstown. This car was built for the Lehigh Valley as number 1551 the "Black Diamond", a solarium observation car built for the 1939 edition of the Black Diamond. It also was used in the 1960's as the visitors center at Taylor Winery on the Bath & Hammondsport.

From what I have found online at http://www.ginosrailpage.com/DOS/doprenyswpass.htm CACV office car #2 is the former Erie #300. LAL #101 sure looks like an Erie "ten hundred."

A real gem in the sale is Rahway Valley #1551, which is the former Lehigh Valley diner "Black Diamond." Sister #1552 is at the Railroad Museum of PA.

This may be abrupt, but it shouldn't be unexpected. Even prior to Mr. Rich's death, the E-9's were put up for sale (where did they go?).

Another issue that needs to be expected is that executor(s) of the estate have a fiduciary obligation to conserve the value of the assets. Whatever their historic value- the passenger equipment has no value sitting and passenger service is inherently fraught with exposure that won't be assumed by anybody who might have to answer tough questions.

Is that 0-6-0 #4039 from Whippany? Why sell it when 385 just came home? Man, someone needs to step in with a whole mess o money and run them again...

Steve -

Actually, it's NOT the same engine. U.S. Army #4039 was #5 on the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway. Delaware-Otsego #2 was originally U.S. Army #4038, and was VBR #8. So, same design, but not the locomotive that was at Whippany, New Jersey.

The E9's were sold to LTEX..Larry's truck and electric in Ohio.
they were moved to the Larry facility in McDonald, OH, in November 2006, and as far as I know, they have not yet left it.

I'll place my money on the Grand Canyon, which seems to be cornering the market on domes these days. I just checked Karl Zimmerman's "Domeliners", and he says "Popemobile" dome 509 is a dome lounge, ex-UP/Auto Train, rebuilt to a theater/inspection car, and not to be confused with the ex-UP/AT dome coach NYS&W sold to the Reading & Northern to become their #3 Catawissa.

Hell, if it's ex-UP, maybe UP bought it back, I dunno.

It is at Selkirk Yard. My sources tell me CSX bought it and possibly one other car.
