A feature by William Volkmer and John Smatlak on the Waterfront Red Car Line in the Spring 2008 issue of Classic Trains reports: "The pending abandonment of freight service in San Pedro in 2009 will also open up additional route options that were unavailable when the line began service (July 10, 2003)." The authors list five possible extensions including a three mile route to Wilmington.
