Well, you kept asking, pondering, wondering - maybe in June of 2008 you can see such an event, though it will be a GG1 in tow.

Henry Ford Museum in Detroit has purchased PRR GG1 #4909 from the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society today and is in the process of removing asbestos as well as the transformer prior to it's move to the museum.

The museum will place it next to the C&O Alleghany after it is cosmetically restored.

Good news for one of the two surviving Leatherstocking Railway
Historical Society's saved GG1's which have been sitting in Milford, NY on a siding for years.

As was said in an earlier thread, this was one of two engines with its transformers intact. It was the only engine with a fraction of hope for returning to operation, prior to the Ford museum's preservation plan. They will be removing the transformers. If any current owner were to run an engine, to think about it, or even to care that they have a complete engine, they might be interested in acquiring from Ford these transformers. If they hurry.

Actually, a correction: It was the OTHER GG1 at Cooperstown, Amtrak 4934/PRR 4917, that had the transformers left in at the request of its original saviors, Historic Red Clay Valley/Wilmington & Western. That's the one mentioned in the other news report, the Pa. green-transportation initiative.
