Ellwood Engineered Castings in Hubbard, OH has offered to donate one of two GE 70 ton switchers to the Tod Engine Foundation in Youngstown, OH for preservation and display. These two locomotives were built in 1942 as New York Central 506 and 510. They were originally used in the Buffalo area by the NYC, and subsequently had several owners including Standard Slag, Valley Mould & Iron, Valley Vulcan Mold and finally Ellwood Engineered Castings.

Here is the 510 as built:

Here is the last operable unit as seen in 2006:

We have to move the locomotive about 5 miles by truck to our site where it will be cosmetically restored. It will sit outside for now but hopefully will be sheltered at some point.

An interesting bit of trivia is the fact that I operated both locomotives when I worked at EEC in 1999-2000.

Wasn't the Todd Engine Foundation the outfit that was going to get the 16-244 engine from Phila. Gear? Did that deal ever go through? Every so often on one forum or another someone asks about that 16-244, which was said to be the last one left in the US.

That was several years ago but yes that was us. I had made an offer that was more than fair but the owner got greedy. I also seem to remember that he was in a hurry for some reason, limiting the time available to do any fundraising. It was stretching us pretty thin as it was, tacking on another grand to ship it to us and then finding a place to put it. I don't know what ever happened to it.

The donor is asking about an appraisal for the locomotive. I would like to point them in the right direction for that. Anyone know who does rail equipment appraisals for tax purposes?

As for assessment, your item notes that they're offering to donate one of the two locos.

I hope you're doing your best to raid the second loco for spares, but if that's not the case, then shouldn't the disposition of the second loco (if it's being disposed of, which seems likely) help indicate the net worth of the donated loco?

I thought they were getting rid of both, but today I saw one of the units sitting on the lead to the melt shop, very much still in service.

So they may keep it as a third backup. We must be geting the one that had the electrical fire a couple of years ago. :(

Update on these two units!
They are not actually NYC 506 and 510, that information was erronius..
they are in fact 512 and 513, confirmed by Steve Timko and Tod Engine Foundation.

NYC 512, (currently 6114A), the unit that suffered a bad electrical fire, is being parted out and scrapped. parts are being used to help preserve 513.

NYC 513 is the unit being preserved at the Tod Engine Foundation:
http://www.todengine.org/
as Ellwood Engineered Castings 6114B.

See *note 6, near the bottom of:
http://gold.mylargescale.com/scottychao ... /index.htm
for more details on these units.

thanks,
Scot

There is another 70 ton locomotive at the Western Railway Museum.

I do not have its details right at hand; but if anybody wants them they can e-mail me.

The locomotive ran on the Central California Traction Company after they took out the third rails.

It has run at the museum; but it is a very tired piece of machinery, I am told.

It is now our largest Diesel on the property. All four of our historic Diesels have Interurban histories. And the Visalia Electric 502 runs fairly often.

The 6114B is about ready for its trip to the Tod Engine Heritage Park. Here it is last week after the fuel tank and air reservoirs were dropped off.

The locomotive will travel to our museum in two loads, frame and cab on one and the trucks and prime movers on another.

The 6114A, nee NYC 512, has not fared quite as well. It will be scrapped by the owners, but not before I have salvaged parts which will be needed in the 6114A's restoration.

This is what killed the 6114A. An electrical compartment fire turned all of the salvageable electrical components into scrap.

Image
The 70 tonners were replaced by a pai of 85 tonners. Here is EEC 01 parked in the melt shop scrap charging area.

Image
EEC 02 is seen here inside the melt shop.

Image
Aside from handling gondolas of scrap into the melt shop, the GEs are called upon to handle bottle cars full of molten iron from the melt shop to the foundry. This is the only location outside of an integrated steel mill where bottle cars are used. EEC rosters five hot metal cars, two 150 ton six axle cars, two 80 ton four axle cars and a 200 ton eight axle car.
