I'm working on 6167's Hiram L. Piper class lights and the green platic inserts inside the lights need to be replaced as they have all melted. I'm going to have new ones laser cut, but was wondering what sort of plastic should I use, ie one that can withstand the heat from the light bulb.

Also, does anyone else need any as I try and make a few extra inserts.

Hello Joe.
Not sure if we have the same type of lights or not? Will be awhile before we get access to her again.

Peter,

All CNR Steam engines were fitted with the HLP Class Lights at some point, although looking at photos, I see someone replaced two of the clear lenses with Green lenses.

New 5 3/8" Diameter lenses in glass and plastic can be obtained from Adlake or Kopp.

Joe,
She did have a couple od lenses "knocked out" a few years back so that could explain the wroong color. Good to know the lenses are readily available.

You might try a theatrical supply house. Theatrical lighting gels come in hundreds of different colors and are designed to work with high power lamps. They are fairly cheap. If you cannot get a lens in the color you need, you can put a piece of gel between the lamp and a clear lens.

If you know a person who works in a legitimate theater, he might be able to liberate enough gel scraps for marker lamps.

Does anyone know what type of plastic the green inserts were made from?

I am unfamiliar with Hiram L Piper classification lights, but if we are referring to the green lenses that 'rotate' into place (between the bulb and exterior clear lens), it is more likely they were originally glass. Pyle-National classification lights (cannonball style) use a 4.25" diameter flat green glass (from Kopp or Corning).

Well all six of the lenses I removed were plastic.
