I won't be in Fort Worth but I think I'll be running the Texas State Railroad excursion next Wendsday....

I will be there, taking the two steam trips and the Quanah Zephyr. The 90-plus temperatures in PA have me all set for the heat of Texas. I haven't missed a convention since 1999.

I am not going there, but I will be here. We will have the restored Northern Texas Traction interurban car #25 open for viewing on the 19th at the Fort Worth Intermodal Station in downtown Fort Worth. I'm gonna see if I can stick a window unit AC in that thing for the afternoon. Sorry Jim, no bonfires this time. Please stop in and see us.

Wrong interurban, Sloan. The Northern Texas Traction had been running for several years by the time the Texas Traction interurban (later the Texas Electric) started running through Plano in 1908.

I was referring to NTT Car No. 25 on display at the FORT WORTH intermodal station at 9th and Jones.

Serious Proposal:

Set up a donation kettle alongside a flyer/brochure for Railway Preservation News and Mid-Continent.

Solicit donations from individuals--with appropriate permission from the NRHS and host chapter. Maybe a specific company (Kalmbach? Carstens? A video company?) will be willing to "sign on" to provide administration and verification of the funds received.

I would suggest--with input and approval from MCRM--that the funds collected be pledged and directed towards a VERY SPECIFIC mission within the flood recovery mission. I've seen British groups have a "kettle" for physical parts such as oil for the engine oil change or piston rings for the diesel, and a second kettle for "overhead" costs such as food and fuel for the volunteers. If the donation administrators are forthright enough to say that the funds collected will be split between equipment rental and paying for gas and food for volunteers to show up, I don't foresee problems.

The flyer should be lavishly illustrated with photos from the web cameras and others taken that show the huge damage in question. Come on, if a bunch of railfans attending a national convention won't help, why do they have a society?

Now let's remember one other thing: This flooding isn't over. There's no telling if we're going to also have to send a crew somewhere else in Iowa or wherever.
