Bad news, good news.

I read Don Meyer's blog report of his survey of the MCRM property yesterday, starting with knee deep water, to chest high water. Not a pretty picture, and his reports of how hard it is to even get to the museum site due to road closures, high water, etc, gives you a real feel for how bad this is not only for MCRM but the surrounding communities as well. Many of MCRM's volunteers must be struggling just with day to day existance under these circumstances, over and above the effects on their museum work.

On the other hand, a glimpse at the one still operating webcam this morning does offer a glimmer of hope and the promise for starting over.
There is a very noticeable drop in the water level in this camera view.
The line up of heavyweight cars which in days past looked like bodies floating on a lake (trucks and undergear completely covered by water) are now sitting on relatively dry ground with a much smaller pooling of water trackside. Still bad, but this is easily the best news of the last couple weeks.

For those who have not taken the time to read Don Meyer's blog, I highly recommend following the link on the Mid-Continent web page. Don is a gifted wordsmith and has written eloquently, not only about the flood but about many topics that should be of interest to all of us.

I visited Mid-Continent less than a month ago and the images of the flooding are just heartbreaking.

Mid-Continent has a strong cadre of skilled volunteers, as evidenced by the quality of the work they do there, and no doubt they will identify their needs as damage assessments are carried out and a plan of action is developed. I'm sure their overriding concern is financial; the flood has not only imposed enormous cost, but has effectively reduced operating revenue to zero. If you want to help, send a check; mine is on its way.

A good week for the folks at Mid-Continent...

They've been able to reopen and resume limited weekend operations, as of this weekend. Also, a last minute grant was secured to allow them to meet their fundraising goal on the Badger 2 fish car.

Details as usual available on their well-designed website.
