Nicely painted. Perhaps just before donation to Pasco, Washington?

Last week, while visiting the out-laws, visited this loco in Volunteer park. A high school classmate of my father-in-law had just hired on at NP in 1960, now retired, described how he watched the old heads power it into the park on panel track with 50lb of air.

The loco appears well cared for.

But what type of valve gear is this?

And it appears sister 1364 is nearing restoration up the road in Toppenish:

All NP S-4 class 4-6-0's were built as Vauclain Compounds by Baldwin. The funny looking valve gear is for the Stephenson gear the engines received when simpled in the 1920's. If you will note, there is no outside valve rod, the valves being the old high pressure cylinders. The engines all were equipped with superheaters when simpled.

There are at least four of the engines displayed, in Toppenish (under operational restoration), Pasco, Missoula MT (1356), and Helena MT (1384?), and possibly a fifth engine on display in North Dakota. For an original class of 40, which mostly worked the west end of the NP, they are a hardy lot.

Here's how they looked as compounds.
