This was the first West Coast rail enthusiast excursion. It was jointly operated by the Pacific Coast Chapter R&LHS (San Francisco) and the Railroad Boosters (Los Angeles) and occurred on October 10, 1937. 150 people came from each city to San Luis Obipso to ride the special train on the narrow gauge.

Believe it or not, three of the cars in the photo are still around. The caboose (#2) is now at the California State Railroad Museum. The three coaches (#102, 102 and 105) were sold in 1938 to the White Pass & Yukon Route and became parlor cars 258, 260 and 262. 262 burned in 1969; the other two are still in operation. Although upgraded with steel underframes and probably subject to other rebuilds, their origin is back in 1893 when built by Hammond in San Francisco -- 105 years ago!

The Railroad Boosters was the first railfan organization on the West Coast (pre-dating the R&LHS chapter by a few months) and later became the Pacific Railroad Society.
