Looks like both steam locomotives and the chop-nosed Geep are being auctioned. I'd love to know how bad the SY really is, hard to tell if it's mostly cosmetic or more serious from the picture.

Then again, for what it may cost to fix, one could almost buy another one, no?

I'm pretty sure that I'm heading up - at least on Friday the 10th - to see the locomotives auctioned. There's a cult interest in seeing what happens to 38, at least among fans of the H&BTM. I want to be there when/if it's sold.

I'm not planning on bidding on things, though a local historical society had some interest in one of the Cambria and Indiana hoppers. That seems to have fallen through, though.

If you get a chance to see either of the 2(?) cabooses in the auction see if you can get a good ID on them.

The coach identified as "New York Central passenger car #215" appears to be listed with a NYS&W car number. I'm a Midwesterner, but because of these cars' similarity to C&NW 5000 series commuter coaches I have a passing interest in them. They were built by Osgood-Bradley, if memory serves correctly.

There is a sister car, number 212, operating on the Whitewater Valley. I think both of these were B&A -> NYC -> D&H -> NYS&W.

It would be nice to see this one paired up with its sister at Whitewater Valley.

The K&K has the now-torched ex-PRR N8 numbered as 23016, though that doesn't jive with any N8 that I've ever seen.

The ex-NYC cab is numbered as ex-CR N7 21064, which seems legit.

Wasn't there an ex-PRR cab up there lettered for the Johnsonburg, Kane, Warren, and Irvine?

I (and I think a few others in our group) agree with you about getting these cars paired up together again at the WVRR, sadly we've just not seen the revenue in the last two years needed to make it happen, timing couldn't be worse.

You are correct that these were built by Osgood-Bradley, they are very nice cars. As you also note, ours was last NYS&W 212, prior to that it was NYC 1135 and B&A 335. We also have CN&W 7718 commuter combine with a similar roof line, though it is in poor condition with a severe electrolysis problem with the aluminum side sheets. The cars do fit well together in appearance.

I went through the trucks on 1135 a few years ago, we cleaned and blasted everything, replaced the wheelsets, nearly every brake bushing, as well as some other items. Bodywork was completed in 2007 and the Pullman green paint went on soon thereafter. Still needs the lettering at this point. Ours doesn't have the trap door hardware that apparently was added around the time it was renumbered to NYC 1135 in the 1930's. It looks like the one in the auction is complete in this regard.

To my knowledge, all the N8s were numbered in the CR 23200 to 23402 range so the #23016 (PRR 477905, Class N5C is bogus.

I think they had 2 NYC/PC/CR cabooses at one time, but maybe not. I was never able to get firm IDs for all of their their cabooses, so ...

The NYC/PC/CR was reported last year as sold to the Oswego NY RR group (at the Depot?) in Seaway Trail State Park, Oswego, NY. I think this is the group that painted the wrong railroad name on a tunnel in the Park and were planning to paint and letter the NYC car with the wrong color and railroad identity.

That being said, does anyone know if Oswego, NY, has a caboose in Seaway Trail State Park and, if so, what caboose it is?

David, I'm glad the car hasn't gone unnoticed. This year more than ever seems to be a year when preservation minded groups are lacking funds. Being a C&NW fan, I know these B&A/NYC cars are a good stand-in for the C&NW 5000 coaches that ran with the C&NW 7700 series combines such as your 7718. The three together would make a nice train for you. Hopefully you can get that electrolysis resolved on 7718 and/or find a way to get 215 at the auction.

Your restoration of 212 looks excellent.

Just a reminder, this auction is coming up next weekend. Quite a few more photos have been posted of RR paraphernalia. I hope that good homes can be found most of the equipment. Maybe the old rapid transit car can go to one of the New York state trolley museums? Has anyone got a confirmation on the per-yard weight of the rail that is stockpiled at Nansen Junction?

At least the 38 doesn't look too bad, thank God. Looks like the SY got the brunt of it, but that's not really a tragedy per say. Kind of like losing in 2008 Mustang in a garage fire, it stinks, but better that than losing a vintage Shelby. In my opinion the loss of an chinese import is somewhere on par with that K&K GP-9. Sad to see any equipment destroyed, but life goes on.

Here's to the 38 getting a good home.

You just dissed every Western Maryland fan on this forum. How many chinese steam engines do you suppose still exist somewhere on Planet Earth? A few hundred? More? Less?

There are exactly three extant Western Maryland first generation geeps. K&K 39 is one of them. There is a world above and beyond steam. Please cut us a little slack.
