Stewartstown #10 is indeed a 44 tonner. There is a 45 tonner with side rods at The Maryland & Pennsylvania R.R. Preservation Society, Muddy Creek Forks, PA. The engine is currently numbered 3, and both Cummins prime movers are operational. They are slowly prepping it for operation.

We have a Whitcomb 44-ton diesel at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, Indiana. #27 is still operational and we use it quite a bit for switching in the yard and also for our guest engineer program.

Surprised to see no mention of the two ex-Hartwell Railroad 44-ton GEs at Southeastern Railway Museum near Atlanta, GA. Maybe Andrew D. can provide some history on these? I know one was restored to its original NYO&W scheme, but I don't know if both came from that road originally or not.

Yes, the one was a former NYO&W unit. Another ex-NYO&W unit (#105) is privately owned at the Southern RR of NJ at Winslow Jct., NJ. They have 2 more 44 tonners on their roster (#410, 412) but I believe both are stored at the moment.

NYO&W 104 was built for them in 1941. We have been told that it was rebuilt at GE sometime in the 50's. It does appear to have newer wiring than the other locomotive, despite being older. Also, the prime movers do not have sequential serial numbers, indicating that one may have been replaced. It went to the Hartwell some time in the 60's, I believe. 104 has been in the shop receiving repairs for the past few months, most notably to address a couple of leaking head gaskets. We rebuilt the heads on the #1 engine a few years ago. It should be back in regular service later this month.

Hartwell 2 was built for the Hartwell in 1950. It was the workhorse of train operations for the first couple of years at our current site, while 104 was receiving paint and mechanical work. It is currently in the shop for a major rebuild that will include rebuilt heads on both engines, radiator core replacement, wiring, a new paint job, ect. ect. We were making good progress, but the need for unexpected repairs to 104 slowed us down. Barring any further delays, 2 should be back sometime next year.

Both of the locomotives came to the museum in the early 1990's. They are the perfect locomotives for our train ride, which only consists of two cabooses at this point. Their best selling point is that they are easy on the track. Unfortunately, we too have noticed that D-17000 parts are becoming harder and harder to find.

We have a GE 65 ton former US Navy Puget Sound. It was donated to us from Cargill in Cincinnati. It is pretty much in original condition, still has the gold glow headlights. It has Cummins engines in it that were probably put in in the early 1970's, replacing the same engine type apparently.

We've put quite a bit on money into this locomotive to get it in the shape that it is, not to mention the cost of moving it to Connersville by truck! We do need one piece of jewelry for this engine. The GE bubble that would have been in the center of the control panel is missing. If anyone can help with that, please let me know.

Whitewater Valley Railroad

I have no idea what engines are in these locomotives, but both are operable at the Knightstown, Carthage, & Shirley tourist railroad in Knightstown, Indiana. Number 215 (black & orange) is the one they've run for many years and does not have side rods. The other engine 468 (blue) has side rods and has been very thoroughly restored, engine work, motors, and complete body pull apart and repaint. He doesn't seem to use it very often, perhaps for fear of getting it dirty. It is usually kept inside the Carthage enginehouse.

I have no idea of the original numbers or history of these engines, both appear to be military engines to me.

Whitewater Valley Railroad

Quincy Railroad #3 resides at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola. It was recently (since this photo was taken) repainted and is undergoing a mechanical restoration at this time:



The SLG&W locomotive behind the #3 is now at the Western Railway Museum near Rio Vista, CA.

Hopefully an extant "WP family" 44-tonner will join the collection one day.

43 tonner Wabash 51, built in 1939. The first diesel electric owned by the Wabash. Now owned and operated by the Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas, Ontario. The same city it called home for its entire Wabash life.

Does anyone out there know if Virginian Ry. 44-tonner # 6 still exists? The last time I heard anything about it, it was in industrial service somewhere in Texas (?). If it's still around, it would be the last surviving Virginian diesel not made into a slug. It would be nice to see it come home to Virginia, and join the steamer it replaced, VGN 0-8-0 # 4.

In 2006 the Danbury Railway Museum recieved a donation of two 44 tonners from Electric Boat of Groton, CT. One is former New Haven 0814 sn18192 built 3/45. The other is Union Pacific 1399 sn28344 built 3/47. the only 44 tonner that UP owned. both units are for the most part origional (Including the footboards. and headlights).the units were maintained well for an industrial setting, however sporadic use the last several years has caught up with them. luckily they also came with the spare parts supply to keep them in service.

NC&STL RY 100 was moved to the Cowan RR Museum in Cowan, TN Last year. After being inactive for an unknown period of time, both D17000's were brought back to life and the locomotive has received a fresh coat of paint in it's as delivered scheme. NC&STL 101 also survives.
