Built for a Pennsylvania steel mill, it ended up at the Wickwire-Spencer, later Colorado Fuel & Iron Co. mill at Palmer, Massachusetts. Now part of the Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum. Oil-fired, and designed for one-man operation, these saddletankers were Baldwin's early answer to encroaching industrial diesels.

That little locomotive has seen it's days. It's a shame they lever her sit there and rust.

#10 was built by BLW in 1934 as a one-man oil-fired "answer" to the newfangled diesel switchers. It has roller bearings and weighs 50 tons. It was sold by BLW to Standard Steel Works, a BLW subsidary. The Palmer plant was closed and contents auctioned in 1970, including a real rarity-- a Heisler Diesel Switcher (not a conversion, but built new by Heisler in the 30s), and a nice, working 30-ton brownhoist steam crane. #10 was sold, the other two scrapped. #10's owner brought her to Essex in 1971, and soon resold her to the current owner (who paid for the $2500 purchase with a used auto loan from his bank).

#10 was steamed a few times in the early 70s; it would usually blow a boiler tube during the day and then be shut down until the next attempt. It did run around the VRR a bit (I have pics somewhere).

About 1987-90, there was a stripdown and survey, and it was discovered that the interior of the boiler was in nice shape from about 2 feet above the bottom of the shell. Below that line... well, it appeared the loco sat for years with a few gallons of water in the boiler, not doing it much good.

Owner took #10 to Shelburne Falls about 1996-98 (much closer to his home) and had/has plans to convert to a tender engine, using an old tender frame from HT&W #4.

So I wonder if the PA Musuem would consider it a rare PA locomotive and try to get their hands on it?

Most all of our collection was donated to us , so I'm not sure if they would spend any money for it.

Len, never hurts to ask. You never know if they may donate it to you guys. The bigger problem, and I'm sure someone will agree, is that getting it moved. The cost of moving something that big is thru the roof. This is what seems to kill any restoration project.

CF&I 10 was moved from The Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum last week to the Connecticut eastern railroad Museum.
