Extant GP-8s

What Paducah re-build GP-7's into GP-8's still exist? Are they operational? #7738 is operational at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum in Versailles, KY

I guess that the lack of replies means that this is the only extant GP-8 left in the world. Which is pretty amazing!

I know of a Paducah GP10!
but you didnt ask for those! ;)

I would change the subject line to read "Extant IC Paducah GP8 and GP10's"
to get a wider response..
and you should specify "paducah" because Conrail also did a rebuilding program where they created GP8's and GP10's..and you probably dont want those on your list.

Has there been any effort to finish the track rehab up to Tyrone?

The photos on the website show that the first bridge is ready for rail.

Since BGRM has the 7738, I was interested in knowing if any other GP-8s had been saved. So far it looks like it might be the only IC GP-8 left. Are any of the Conrail re-builds still in existence and where they rebuilt by Paducah?

In answer to the question about our returning to Tyrone, it is my understanding that we have qualified for a grant that may make it possible to repair trestle #3 and thus return to Tyrone. However, as yet, we have not received any of the actual money.

Former-Conrail GP8 5428, built originally as Pennsylvania Railroad GP7 8574, was rebuilt at Paducah. It's now on the Belvidere & Delaware River Railroad as their 1854.

Cant find exact numbers, but about half of the Conrail units were done at Paducah.

Well thanks to everyone for the information. It looks like there are only two GP-8s left. One ex-Conrail, one ex-ICG. That was the information that I was looking for.

I'm not 100% sure of the number, but I've seen an ex-Everett GP running at Morrisville, PA (would have been from last winter/this spring when we had to go down there to spin power or pick up a slab train). So if that is the only one in Everett paint they have, then it must be the one and the same. Looked a lot better than those green mountain engines they have. Don't get me wrong, I love the green mountain engines, but the Everett one just had less rust and grime.
