We found this part under the steam dome for 565. Can someone let me know if it goes to 565 and what it does? Thanks.

If I am not mistaken, it is the "base" for a stand pipe. Water supply is on the side and the actual stand pipe comes out the top... These would be located 4-5 feet below ground in a concrete box.

I think you're right on the money, Jason. The spring-thing on the left is an "anti-water hammer" valve to control the pipes from banging around when the 10" waterline flow is abruptly shut off. The vertical pipe riser drops into the top of this valve casing.

A steam-era part, and an important one, but not a piece of 565.

By the way, did anyone find the unique Hancock double-inspirator (injector) that was on the engineer's side ahead of the cab? Evidently the DL&W didn't trust the fireman with the water.... with both injectors combined on the engineer's side.

Do you have pictures of this injector?

It's visible in the photos of the right side of the locomotive-- mounted just ahead of the cab. It has piping attached to it, and the two delivery pipes run from the front of the inspirator to the check valve(s) on the side of the boiler.

Howard, we didn't see that in the box of stuff we have. But next time I'm up there I will start looking for it. Rumor has it that there is a box car with more parts. Seems like alot of parts were sent out when it was at New Hope and those parts never made it back to the engine. But trust me Steam town has tons of stuff around in rooms and the boneyard so we may be able to find one. We did find one of the air pumps!

Is this common... for steam engines to arrive into restoration shops in many boxes and piles of assorted parts?

Rob, this could be a typical steam engine here in the states. Most have had stuff removed or taken by collectors. Some items are removed to keep other locomotives operational. There is a thread below about Lackawanna 565. Someone posted an article from a book about the locomotive's history.
