I don't normally post too much on the forum regarding 6069 but now is the time I need to turn to you for help. We recently had a quote submitted for the Asbestos removal on 6069 and it turns out that if Council does not support funding, that will be the end of any discussions on restoration. Council’s support or lack of support will determine the future of the locomotive. I am currently in the process of submitting a grant application to the city for the funds for the Asbestos removal only, restoration funding can come later once the Asbestos problems are out of the picture.

If anyone has any tips or comments or would like to show their support to saving rather than disposing of the Locomotive can you please either pm me or send your messages to engine6069@sympatico.ca Keep in mind they are not seriously looking at scrapping her it is one of the options and I am educating the city in regards to her historical significance and importance.

Some support coming in from the public. I am thinking of contacting the paper next week to get the word out that 6069 could face a bleak future...

Scare them with liability. If necessary, poke some holes in the jacket and strew some asbestos below the boiler (just kidding). Seriously, most municipalities will remediate public health azards once made aware of them, if necessary in a very public venue - just try not to burn any bridges when publicizing the hazmat concern.

Thanks for the comments. It is going to take some educating I think as there is still feelings that it is not historically significant yet when the memorial display was unveiled she was praised by one of the Councillors as being significant to the city....

Not to mention, one of what? Three survivors of her class and celebrated design? "Bullet Nose Betty's" are much beloved amongst Canadian steam devotees. SHe appears in excellent shape at the moment, possibly restorable if that time should ever come again. Leaving her covered with asbestos means a water logged boiler, rust, rot, and eventual remediation that will, no doubt, be far more expensive as the need will be dictated by unpleasant and untimely circumstances. This is an elegant locomotive, which appears to be at the junction of some main highways in your town. Her upkeep says something warming about the community to which she was entrusted.

Can you not point to the 6167 in Guelph, and say, "look what other municipalities are doing"? These engines are reasonably comparable in size, from the same road, exposed to the same elements. It took a lot of years and a lot of postponements, but she is finally getting all her asbestos removed.

Thanks for the advice Finders.. I am in touch with the guys at Guelph and they are doing exactly what needs to be done to 6069. We will be using their project as a guide on what to do regarding repairs and work on 6069.
