The Friends of the Valley Railroad owns a former PRR cabin car,
number 477449. At present, it is painted and lettered for the Valley
Railroad, and used several times per month on our trains.
Over the winter, we would like to restore it to its former PRR appearance.

Can someone please tell us what the correct color red would be for the car?
We have some photos showing lettering, but the color is quite important for
an proper paint job. Any diagrams and more broadside photos would also
be appreciated.

Many thanks!

Hi Lee,
Your best bet in to contact the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, I'm sure they would know how to help you.

The color scheme and base color of PRR cabin cars varied over the years. Major changes were prewar vs. postwar in color, 1954-1960, post-1960, with a number of variations. For example, cars rebuilt in the 1960's were painted Focal Orange, not a freight car color.

So, a date will have to be established. Paint drift cards are available from the PRRT&HS.

The Valley Railroad is based in Essex, CT.
The line is leased from Old Saybrook (Amtrak, P&W connection),
to Maromas (P&W), at the south end of Middletown, CT....about 21 miles.

Lee,

Ah! you dare brave the world of PRR paint and lettering.

Send me a PM with a phone number to call you at. There is far to much info to discuss about PRR paint and lettering arrangements then could ever be written in one post here on RYPN.

btw, To my knowledge cabooses where considered freight cars and they where painted FCC (freight car color). Color drift cards where used to precisely match engine and passenger equipment.
