Re: H&BT #38

My thanks to those who have expressed their congratulations either here or in person at the auction event...

We all look forward to seeing the 38 run again someday. Right now we will focus our time and resources on getting the engine out of Kane and evaluating the restoration path.

Will it be running in time for the Holidays?

All kidding aside, let me also wish you the very best on behalf of all of all those who have congratulated you with a simple smile and heartfelf wish of good will upon reading but have yet to formally put it down in pixels, or ink. It's very fitting that #38 should find it's way to the Everett, the closest place to "home" there could be. Alan, it's really nice to know you are active here on RYPN as well!

While (we) have your ear, what is the status of B&H #11, the 2-6-0 that was shipped to the WMSR for restoration? I'm curious the history of that engine, it's status and how the purchase and hopeful restoration of #38 will fit in.

Last, the Everett Railroad is a for profit operation, I'd bet my own money that a link provided for charitable donations would bring in some good will. Not sure how much, but more then nothing. Many operators have done well with "bricks", coins, ties and such as a way to drive donations even higher.

Some interesting history of H&BT as well as #38:

Found some history of B&H #11;

#11 was built by Alco-Cooke in December 1920, #62635, for stock. It was sold as Narragansett Pier RR 11 in March 1923. It was sold as B&H 11 in April 1938 and retired in 1951. It was sold to Rail City Inc in 1955 and closed in 1972. It was sold back as Narragansett Pier RR 11 in 1977 but never used and resold as Middletown & New Jersey 11 in 1982.

Thank you for your interest and kind words.

Engine #11 needs a new inside firedoor sheet, new tires, and some heavy repairs to the tender. The WMSR was making room in the shop for this project when engine 38 came up for sale, so resources were temporarily diverted to purchasing and moving the 38. If all goes well, WMSR should be able to start evaluating 38's boiler sometime this spring and after that we will decide which engine gets shopped first.

Keep in mind that steam locomotives live in a fragile world today and nobody can predict what the future economic, political or regulatory environment will be. My hope is to see both engines back in steam sometime in the next couple of years, business conditions permitting. In the meantime, visit your favorite tourist railroad or museum, buy a ticket, take a ride, and enjoy it while you can.
