The answer for th question in news brief regarding the fate of the espee's Black Butte water column is that the original was destroyed in a derailment of Amtrak's Coast Starlight last year. Derailment was caused by car fouling the main track.

Sure glad I got a shot of 4449 pulling up to it and taking water in 1989. Also following that I got my one and only cab ride to Dunsmuir. Was just looking at some of the original footage from that trip yesterday, but didn't get that far. Black Butte will forever be in this guys memory.

I posted that info to Hume two days ago. Way back in about '77 the Friends of the 1727 were going to get the plug from Mt Shasta (I think that's the one, I'm working from memory. It may have been Dunsmuir's old plug), but just before delivering it, the SP maintenance folks decided they needed it for "stratigic spares." Wonder where it went, sure could be used now!

Well, unless they sent it off for scrap, the folks at the Western Railway Museum (at Rio Vista Jct.) had a base and water column sitting in the weeds outback of their shop. I know they have no use for it...

According to several subsequent correspondents, the Black Butte water plug was actually destroyed a while back in a derailment caused by a CORP train fouling the main, which Amtrak then ran into.

I got to start checking who posts these messages with pictures. I think the pic is relating to the subject but Greg usually puts one of his video covers instead.

Thats because the video relates directly to the post(the shots I mentioned are in said video). Also I don't have any other pictures to post except whats on the video images on my web site.

Also I have been taken by surprise sometimes posting in that the images and stuff you posted the last time stay there and will post again unless you remember to delete one. For example I have typed in no url's this time but the same stuff will pop up. Sorry this is a major concern for you.

Oh its not a major concern Greg, actually not a concern at all. Just a little jab. I have had a couple of posts with the wrong pictures attached because the site remembers your last image URL as a cookie.
