The Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark is proud to announce the return to service of steam locomotive 93. Delivered to the railroad in January 1909, it was the last locomotive from an order of “four monster ore locomotives” received by the Nevada Northern Railway.

Restored to service in 1993, locomotive 93 pulled excursion trains and was featured in the annual winter photo spectaculars until August 2007. Sidelined by axle problems, the restoration of locomotive 93’s running gear started in April 2008. The entire running gear was disassembled and parts were remanufactured, refurbished, or custom made. A series of test runs were made on December 27 and 28, 2008 and locomotive 93 was declared back in service.

Locomotive 93’s hundredth birthday celebration will be held on January 17 and 18 2009 at the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark in Ely Nevada. Events of the weekend will include excursion trains pulled by locomotive 93, an auction and a fireworks show fired from the birthday train.

During the first two weekends of February, locomotive 93 will participate in the annual photo shoots on the railroad. And for those who have ever wondered what it was like to be a steam locomotive engineer, locomotive 93 will be available for rental in our locomotive rental program starting in April.

It is a great way to start a new year, with a steam locomotive that is ready for its second century of service.

Great news! NN is high on my list of places to visit. Maybe 2009 will be the year.

Thanks for posting.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

I'm consistently impressed by the management at Nevada Northern. They took a bad situation and resolved it in a timely manner, while constantly keeping the public and donors (actual and potential) apprised of their progress. While not every repair can be completed in a year’s time, as was the case here, the focus, determination and "openness" displayed on their website serve as an example to us all.

I know a number of museums that once had an active steam program that now seem to waffle between projects with few updates to be found. They're not likely to get my money.

Kudos to the folks in Ely. There are lessons to be learned here. Can't wait to see the NN (and drop some $$$) when I visit in July.

P.S. See also, the Monticello Museum's steam project or RMNE's progress on the Nuagatuck RR as examples of "How it's done".
