Alexander, One Last thing more or less not related to the Model 40 directly but this is addressing you point of stepping out of one persons "Area" and into another’s to cherry pick projects. Case in point locally we used to have two restorable tank engines in a scrap yard in Pulaski VA. Most of the groups separately, and some trying to band together had been trying to save the equipment in the Pulaski Scrap yard (Gem City Scrap) now owned by Cycle Systems based out of Roanoke. This Scrap yard has for years been a treasure chest of vintage everything Autos, Industrial Equipment and Railroad Equipment. Over the years our local Roanoke Based groups and my self have tried to work with the then family owners to buy and or express interest in saving the Railroad equipment. The family would have nothing of it at the time leaving the two tank engines, N&W Combine and a whole train of N&W Wooden MofW Boxcars to languish. Right around the time the Scrap yard was sold to the larger Cycle Systems firm, a buyer from out of New York swooped in and bought both tank engines, and the N&W Combine was scrapped, leaving only the Wooden MofW Boxcar train standing today. Why do I mention this as an example well here we had two Tank Engines that used to be owned and used by the Viscose Company Plant in Roanoke VA which just happens to be the same location that the Roanoke Chapter NRHS uses to shop and store it's equipment today and for years. In fact the very spot that the Chapters Diesel Locomotives set is where the Viscose #6 used to set and spent its years. Gee here is a Nationally known Historical group lost the chance to save own and operate the very locomotive that used to run in the Chapters present location not to mention fits the groups present size needs and focus of operational interest on the 9-mile short line. While I'm happy that the present owner has found success with the preservation and restoration to operation of the Viscose #6 and soon the other tank engine bought with it. I didn't hear anyone complain when that person from New York came down here in our back yard and took two locomotives that have direct historical ties to our area and one that our groups were trying to secure. Well based on your logic, seams to me that there are many pieces of equipment in the NY & NJ area that need attention again based on your "home turf" logic, so why did this guy come down here and take the two tank engines when there was local interest and he apparently had plenty to chose from back home?

As to Viscose#6, Scott seamed to be the right person in the right place with the right Money and a plan to get it out quick which is what the seller wanted. you sure can't fault the guy for what he's done with it. It's a great little locomotive and him and his crew are GREAT to work with!!!!
I see Mr. Pullman in the same light, he has a plan, stuck with it, made the proper contacts and is willing to work on there thier terms and create a comfort level with the owner that seams to be working. I had no luck in doing the same with them. As long as it's saved who cares where. It's small enough to be moved fairly easy and as long as that is not to the scrap yard who cares. It also sounds like if something falls through Mr pullman will make all atempts to see it goes somewhere safe.
As for NY and NJ people Scott is from west of Buffalo so he's not a true New Yorker per say :-) From what i've read NJ is a whole "nuther" planet unto it self!

Being from the other planet (NJ), I fully understand both points of view. If a piece of railroad equipment is saved, then it’s good for everybody. I do have one caveat though. If a group plucks a piece of equipment out from under the nose of another group, they should DO SOMETHING WITH IT!

On my planet, I have seen cases where groups have snatched up equipment and then NOT done anything with it. This probably goes on in the rest of the universe too. I have to be careful what I say because the people on my planet are sensitive. That is why I do my own thing with my freight cars, and like Steve, I bankroll the endeavor myself.

As A lifelong resident of NJ, I have to agree that NJ is another planet, and that preservation, private or otherwise, rarely works for long. And if anyone runs into some numberboards with 7221 or 583 painted on them, they are stolen-

".........right money and plan to get it out quick".

Counts as much as being in the right place at the right time. How many potential recipients are so prepared?

Regarding the Model 40 in Amsterdam, there were efforts on the part of New York based railway groups to save the engine and display it here in the Elmira, New York area as part of an indevelopment rail museum project. We even had county officials involved in the communication end of things. Basically we were told it was not available. While I would certainly love to see it here, and a good home could be provided, I would not step in the way of others efforts to save it, especially if those efforts have a chance of succeeding.

The Pulaski engines were offered for sale years before they went to NY. The price was to high. The owner had people and railway museums that wanted them but they wanted them for nothing. The tank engines were offered to local groups. If they did not go to NY they would be cut up.
On the other hand why not have viscose 6 go to roanoke back at the plant to make a couple runs!!

My 2cents again...I'm happy with what's happened with the Pulaski VA engines, they have a good home and are doing well and as you said they more than likely would have been cut up if not saved like they were. I just used them as examples in my discussion on saving projects from areas out side your own. Given I'm working on various projects out side my area (Roanoke VA) right now like the Model 40 in Amsterdam NY.

Also here is a link to images and an update on the Model 40 formerly used to switch cars at "FARMERS UNION ELEVATOR CO., Mohall, ND" ...and as described... "The Model 40 is painted two-tone yellow and red"...Per Don Stracks request for update.

Here are those that are still in existance:

s/n 1834 Amsterdam, New York/possibly going to Roanoke, Virginia
s/n 1835 Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum/North Judson, Indiana
s/n 2284 Being rebuilt by a locomotive rebuilder in northwest Indiana
s/n 2285 Walkersville Southern
s/n 2287 Travel Town Museum/Los Angeles, California
s/n 2288 Industrial Museum in York, Pennsylvania

So, of the original 11 built, these 8 still survive. A rather amazing statistic I think. Additions/corrections are obviously welcome.

This list goes back a few years, but I thought I'd repost it along with a new photo of our Model 40 at HVRM in North Judson. The museum had "assigned" the little locomotive out next to the state highway as an advertising sign and, as you can probably deduce, the unit was vandalized with graffiti and some broken windows. Recently brought back on to our property, museum secretary Mark Knebel gave it the new coat of paint shown. We still will need to replace the broken windows, but the unit is now scheduled to be put on our museum display track, a much better home for it in the future.

Resurrecting this old thread, here's an update on the status of Cushing Stone's Model 40 as of 3 June 2013, to include photos inside the cab:

http://ginosrailblog.blogspot.com/2013/ ... ranch.html

Excerpt:

As of this time, there are no plans to move the engine from The Cushing Stone Property. Attempts have been made to buy the engine, but the owners aren't interested. If a group would like to re-paint the engine in this location, that can be arranged...

I have always thought that a museum that already has an exUP DDA40X should get one of these and couple it to the DD. What a contrast, which would impress the public, too.

Okay, I know about the Glen Summit (which is now owned by Iowa Pacific), but what other Pullmans have you acquired/sold over the years?

Thanks in advance.
