I saw this article and was trying to figure out which locomotive that are talking about. I'm sure someone know the details.

Dear Tom:
This locomotive was sold to our support group: "Freinds of the Valley Railroad".
It arrived last Friday (1/9/09). The tanks & cab and bits and pieces were delivered last week.
Lately, this loco. has been at the Dept. of Public Services yard in Peabody, MA.
This locomotive was one of the "worst of show" in the Steamtown collection. We auctioned it off before we moved to Scranton along with an 0-4-0T (to Dave Clark of Clark's Trading Post) and an 0-6-0 tender loco to City of Gorham, NH.
It will replace No. 103 as our display locomotive up front when No. 103 leaves (owned by Railroad Museum of New England).

Here is how she looked a month or so ago before the move to Essex began. To add to J. David's posting, this is the same Porter which sat in a junkyard in Newbury, MA for almost 20 years. Hats off to Mr Richard Carnevale, former head of Public Services in Peabody, MA for rescuing this engine and trying to put her back together. As can be seen in the photos, much was accomplished. Now on to better days at the Valley RR for Simons Wrecking No 2!

Actually, I have read that her boiler was in very good shape prior to Peabody receiving her. I've visited the engine at the public works yard, and unfortunately, for some reason, the steam dome had been cut off, but retained. Yes, she needed parts and restoration materials, but was being considered for renovation when auctioned off by Steamtown. From then, she languished at a junk yard, in pieces, with high hopes of being run one day. She went to Peabody in lieu of the owners back taxes. Plans were to display her or even operate her in Peabody. It's just as well she go to a real RR Museum. The paint makes her look far healthier than when I last saw her!

Hi Richard, the steam dome was removed due to height restrictions between Newbury to Peabody. As you can see in the top photo it has already been reapplied.

Thanks for the info. She is looking pretty good in those photos and I am sure she will be well cared for in the future. She has a good home now. I did not know the 103 was leaving. She is going to another museum? I think I must have missed a bunch of steam news.

Tom, the 103 is owned by Railroad Museum of New England and at some point (I've heard) will be leaving Essex. Maybe Howard will see this and elaborate...

The problem, Stephen, is could that weld ever be judged as sufficient to allow full restoration to steaming? Perhaps the dome and flanges could be removed and replace? I suppose not every steam was fated to see boiler pressure again, but I hate to see a locomotive rendered inoperable.

...how interesting that it bares such a striking resemblance to the WK&S's #65....

They are definitely related... Simons Wrecking No 2 is only 10 years older, she's set-up as an oil burner, and her drivers have a slightly larger diameter... but they appear to be very similar.

Dick did his best to raise funds, but I would assume that the cut-off portion was merely tacked back on and not "repaired." In any case the entire locomotive would have to be torn down (again) for any operational restoration...the steam dome could conceivably be repaired by a boiler shop. And money is all it would take... lots of money! :-)
