I've been told that recently NS no longer allows limiting blocks on couplers for locomotives moving on their own wheels. They apparently want alignment control couplers. Has anyone had any experience with this? Specifically I understand this to be related to the standard '40's-'50's era switchers. Any ideas on whom to contact at NS?

Our clients ship locomotive on a regualr basis and to our knowledge only BNSF & UP are requiring true alignment control couplers. BUT expect CSX & NS to soon follow!

I contacted a locomotive broker located in NS territory, and his answer:

"I can confirm all class 1 railroads are requiring the alignment control couplers. I hope to look into details, exemptions etc."

It is my understanding that, at least on the UP, locomotives dead-in-consist without alignment couplers may move as the only piece in what would amount to a one-car train, which as you can imagine would be cost prohibitive. This may have also changed by now.

We were quoted $26,000.00 To move one of our SD-10's From Dallas to San Antonio. Needless to say we sent a crew up to put the alignment couplers and draft gear in. This was by U.P. The funny part is, it is working for U.P. at both locations.

I know you asked about NS, but I thought I'd just chime in with a late response from a local (Maryland) CSX foreman and loco inspector, who says "limit blocks are still OK on CSX" for now.......
