I recently learned New Jersy DOT In early 1983 obtained some E44 electric engines from Conrail. I know Amtrak had some they tried , but what did NJDOT do or notdo with them ?

They didn't do much with them. If I remeber right, they came the same way the E-60's came -- CHEAP!

Not sure if Transit ever had one turn a wheel, but they are gone now, andone made it into the state collection.

There were all sorts of funky aideas around NJT in the early '80's. My fave was to gut one prime mover out of the E-8's and drop in the E-44's electrical gear with a pan mounted on a chopped down protion of the roof (above where the steam generator was). Wacky? Yes, but the idea was a dual-mode engine and it got serious enough thought to make it into the NJ newspapers!

As I recall, they were the same 6 E44a's that went to Amtrak. Amtrak's plan was to use them on NEC work trains thru NY Penn Station, but they never went into service. One, AMTK 502 (ex-PRR 4465) is preserved at the RR Museum of PA. The rest were turned over and scrapped at Wilmington.

When I was cleaning out surplus coach materials from the old freight car shop at E'port for Steamtown Foundation about 1986, these and the Southern E-8's were parked in this leaky old building. Other occupants were a severly wrecked MU car, a mountain of old coach seats,and the P-70 that had been a commuter club car.
