I saw a picture of a Jersey Central baby face in 1946. It sported a what appears to be a black and golden yellow scheme separated by a single red strip. I've since learned that the black is actually blue. Anybody know what they called those colors and furthermore, do you know of a realistic representation of those colors here on the net?

Based on all the color slides and photos I've seen of CNJ power, the "blue" in question is a relative of the PRR's "DGLE" or "dark green locomotive enamel", often mockingly described as one part green and 10-1000 parts black! Just substitute blue for the green.......... >;-)

Um, no.

The Baldwin double-enders were delivered in a "Tangerine and Blue" scheme; the lighter color ("yellow") was a light orange, and the blue was much brighter than DGLE in tone-- close to the B&O's darker Royal Blue. The two colors were separated by a thin vermillion stripe in the original version of the paint scheme.

The BLW freight A-B units and the first EMD F3 A-B units carried this scheme. About 1950or so, the CNJ converted to the so-called "Tiger Stripe" scheme of Pullman Green body and Imitation Gold/Yellow stripes/letters. The later road switchers also were delivered in that version (RS-3s, GP7s, etc.).

The replica CNJ F3s that are in Jim Thorpe were painted in the second Tangerine & Blue scheme, without the vermillion stripe separation. Lots of web pics of those units; do a bit of searching.

Howard is right about the "Tangerine & Blue." I would also add that it was applied in the stripe scheme to the little FMs. They looked SHARP.

CNJ's locomotive green changed over time, but it was never even close to PRR DGLE.

Sea Mist green, used on everything green up to the SD35's had much more "green" in it than DGLE. When it was clean, it had nice green hue, though not as rich as Hunter Green. When it was dirty, at had the drab pall of Pullman green. The SD35's came in a green that appeared to be richer, or at least had more "pop.'

Then of course, the B&O blue was used later on, plus the red and white scheme, and them some outfit with really bright blue took over ;-).

After posting the above, I learned that the CNJ actually used Pullman green on switchers, at least in the early years of dieselization.

The roadswitchers were painted in the Sea Mist green.

Take those photos with a grain of salt since they are both later-day repaints.

I wonder if the CNJ GP7's in the URHS collection wear the same green used on #1554?
