The 1922 Car Builder's Cyclopedia has about four pages of info on Waugh draft gear, with detailed drawings of several different applications of both freight and passenger products.

The 1922 Cyclopedia happens to be the last edition not still under copyright, and a CD version is available from RailDriver:

The CNW flatcars were built from 1922 thru 1925. The only information I have is from an old picture “CAST STEEL YOKE” “COUPLER SHANK 6” X 8” “WAUGH FRICTION DRAFT GEAR”

I have ordered the 1922 Cyclopedia on CD. But any information I can find will help.

I hope you're modeling in a relatively large scale, like 1" or 1-1/2" scale, because the draft gear on even a prototype car is almost impossible to see, encircled as it is by the coupler yoke. Even technical illustrations always have to show one sill removed so you can even see the draft gear. That being said, the Waugh gear shouldn't be too hard to model, since the friction action took place between stacks of rectangular plates bent to a slight crown, like very short elliptical springs.

Of more interest might be whether the cars used riveted or keyed yokes, since the time they were built coincides with the general adoption of keyed coupler shanks. I have copies of Haskell & Barker drawings (from the Pullman Library at IRM) of several groups of Soo Line boxcars built around this time, and that is one of the noticeable changes between otherwise identical underframes.

Yes, it is 1-1/2" scale. I would like to build this one car as close to scale as I can. The cars where built for the CNW by Western Steel Car and Foundry at Hegewisch, IL in 1922 and a second group from Standard Steel Car at Hammond, IN in 1925.

Do you know if any of the drawings from Standard Steel Car made it in to the Pullman collection?

I will have a load of 6 John Deere tractors to finish it off.

Hopefully Ted Anderson will chip in here, but as I recall, Ted's project from about a year ago was to try and catalog / organize the Standard Steel Car Co. materials, so yes, there is something. How much, I don't know, since the roads I'm interested in didn't have any cars from this builder.
