Back in the 70's, I saw a photo of an Alco Pre-HH in THE SHORT LINE magazine that was found in Texas. Does anyone know of any that may still exist ?
The one in Texas was reportedly scrapped.

PRE-High-Hood? I think you're limiting yourself to the few Alco/GE/I-R boxcabs out there.

If you're counting HH's, my records show Milwaukee HH660 1603 at the Illinois Railway Museum.......

Stirring the pot again, Mr Mitchell?

No..........

If I am to believe my "Second Diesel Spotters Guide" and "Diesel Locomotives: The First 50 Years" by Pinkepank and Marre, the total Alco-built non-"boxcab" pre-HH "diesel" loco production would be nine: NYC tri-power switcher #525, seven 300-hp B-B switchers (two to the LV and five to the US Navy), and New Haven 0900/Alco demo 600--the latter only if you regard it as distinctly separate from the rest of the 78 Alco HH600's. And none of those, as far as anybody knows, was preserved. The variations among the various HH's alone, even between the same model, that are detailed in the latter book are almost bewildering.

Do you have a different way of reading the original question?

Mr. Mitchell is correct. I was referring to those Alco's that pre-dates the well known High Hoods. I already know that there are 5-7 HH's running or preserved.

I asked the above question just in case someone knows of one hidden away in someones back yard or warehouse that has never been seen by the public eye.

Mr Mitchell,

To be a bit more specific, I was referring to your choice of one specific example of the HH series, and it's current ownership (IRM).

Given that the person who started this thread had an unfortunate choice of words on a website belonging to his organization,as well as in a previous thread, regarding another locomotive owned by IRM, I have assumed that your choice of this particular locomotive may have been a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt to stir up further controversy.

I didn't even pay attention to who was asking the question.

As it turns out, my "notebooks" only showed TWO "preserved" HH's--one at the IRM, and the other referenced by the link in Don C.'s post. The others I happened to know of aren't technically preserved but still in industrial use--but I see by http://yardlimit.railfan.net/alco/existing/index.html that my information is slightly out of date . . . [scribbles in notebooks/SDSG....]

Ain't my fault that someone can't ask about whether something exists in rail preservation without one of them happening to be at the IRM. . . . >;-)

UPDATE: Hey, Alco-haulics, here's an HH you can pursue:

(Sorry, that truck blocks a better view......)

I can accept that explanation :) Every once in a while I drive onto the property, and do a double take myself, asking "Where did those come from???"

Accusations of "Pot Stirring", etc., withdrawn.

Kind of interesting. Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum currently has a 44-ton center cab Whitcomb in service that once ran at the Port of Indiana (after serving at a number of other locations). When in service for the P of I, she was painted in a Bi-Centennial red/white/blue color scheme and numbered, yes....1776. There has even been some discussion at the museum as to repainting her into that scheme again. Would certainly be ironic if the High Hood ALCO joined her at HVRM. But is that locomotive available? And what is its heritge? Anyone know?

Info on the Portage, Ind. HH660:

Behr Iron and Steel

model: HH660
built: 1940 b/n 69257
history:
- DL&W #409 (new)
- EL #324
- RELCO #603
owner: Joseph Behr and Sons, Inc.
location: Behr Port of Indiana, Portage, Indiana.

RELCO is a leasing company, and if you were interested in said loco, RELCO would be your contact/folks to beg. Trains did an article on the high-hood Alcos and RELCO a while back, as I recall..........

Judging from the Behr website, they may have a sense of history as well:

Behr has donated at least one locomotive to a museum in the past, IRM got our little 12 ton Whitcomb from them.

Les,

I don't know. But judging from the most recent photo I saw from HVRM:
http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 207&nseq=0
You'd be a fool NOT to go ahead and pursue/grab that old-timer if you could, as a stablemate to 310. Rumors are that the Relco unit has roller bearings; even if it doesn't, it's practically in North Judson's back yard, relatively speaking, and trucking wouldn't be impossible. But remember, it's RELCO's, not Behr's, although anything is theoretically possible, save for skiing through a revolving door while striking a match on a wet bar of soap........ Maybe HVRM could find a suitable loco to trade? (Though I think RELCO has its own certain biases towards those high-hood Alcos.....)

Of course, parts are likely to be a rhymes-with-witch, but there seems to be something in the Indiana water with regards to that (Whitewater Valley and Limas, etc.)

There have been lots of "eyes" on DL&W #409 back east, but until she's tucked away in a museum or a benevolent common-carrier, I'm concerned.

I'm getting the horse WAY in front of the cart here, but I'm going to ask this question anyway. Behr/RELCO #603 was DL&W #409 and then EL #324. What paint scheme did she wear on the Erie-Lackawanna? Our S-1 #310 sure looks pretty painted in the EL gray/maroon/yellow trim paint scheme, but of course, she probably never actually wore this scheme. But the museum wanted her repainted from her "plain" Erie #310 black/yellow trim paint scheme to go with our EL #C345 caboose. Just wondered if the HH-660 ever got the gray/maroon scheme when she ran on the EL.
