And on the classic Joe Hack designed former Lehigh Valley tugboat Cornell, powered by a genuine Cleveland Diesel 16-278A engine. Nice to see the Cornell operating in waters closer to home after many years in Massachusetts and then in Chesapeake Bay.

A Cleveland Diesel 278? That sounds like a rare beast. I presume it would be somewhere between a 110 (used on RDC's in the 6-110 configuration) and the 567 (from 6 to 16 cylinders in thousands of locomotives and many non-rail applications).

The Cleveland Diesel 278A is actually a slightly larger engine than the 567 in single cylinder displacement. My recollection is that the 278A is about 632 cubic inches swept displacement per cylinder.

The 278 has a design that is similar to the 567, but with a few important differences.

If I remember correctly, a 278 is a 40 degree vee engine ( as opposed to the 567, 645, and 710 series 45 degree design), with the cylinders offset slightly between banks to allow for a different connecting rod arrangement.

This allows for a slightly narrower block, due to the fact that the lower ends of the cylinder liners fit between the liners on the other bank.

The firing order is also a bit different than a 567, due to the 40 degree vee angle, instead of the typical EMD order of firing 2 cylinders on a V16 every 45 degrees, the 278 fires 1 cylinder at a time, alternating between angles of 40 and 5 degrees.

Instead of the typical EMD "fork and blade" rod arrangement, the 278 has a more "ALCOish" arrangement of 2 separate rods on each crank throw.

The heads are also more "ALCOish", with separate valve covers for each cylinder.

I do believe the 278 is a 30 vee, cant remember off the top of my head. It does have some advantages over the 567 as well such as the separate heads.
