New York Central from the 1940's Video

Hi all,
I hope enjoy this old time look of the New York Central, The film was taken by The late Sam Parks of Chicago, Ill. in the 1940's with 16mm film . The information was provided by Mr. Parks it was written on the back of the film box. I bought this film off E bay last year.

There is only a modest amount of New York Central steam locomotives still in existance:

Two 4-8-2's

Two 0-6-0's

One 2-8-0 (as AT&SF)

One 4-4-0 (#999)

One 4-4-2 (Michigan Central)

Some might add the former IHB 4-6-0 to the list.

The question might also be, is there any chance that a NYC locomotive might steam one day? I think that the best possibility would be 0-6-0 #6894 that is at the Whitewater Valley Railroad in Indiana.

I know there one steamer left of the LNE. and none of the LV. But I always wonder about the NYC.

Whoops! The list should have read TWO 2-8-0's. I forgot that the OTHER steamer located in Maine with the old Indiana Harbor Belt 4-6-0 is a former NYC Consolidation that had originally been built for the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern and eventually became NYC #5780. I blame my forgetfullness on working over the past year to get IHB's Grasselli Tower moved to our museum and the IHB has been burned into my brain I guess. Sorry about the omission.

If you want to get technical, there are two more. The c.1876 Boston & Albany 4-4-0 "Marmora," built at the NYC subsidiary's Springfield, MA shops and still extant at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, was leased to the Hudson River Railroad for a time before coming into the Purdue Collection. Also, the DeWitt Clinton replica at the Henry Ford Museum was built by the NYC, itself a copy of what I believe might technically be the Central's very first locomotive. (Given the Mohawk & Hudson was among it's earliest predecessors). It might not be much of an engine, but it's got to count for something...

Don't forget at least one of the locomotives abandoned at Eagle Lake, in Maine.
