Actually, as has been pointed out to me, Hal's boat was the Elizabeth Louise; and YES there are some that still think Hal was done in, and it seems with good reason to be suspicious. Probably we will never know. Some of those locomotives are about 15 miles from here (well, as the crow flies, the road's don't go straight 'round these parts!).

That would have been my Surviving World Steamship CD-ROM I had available on the Internet. It included 2856 steam boats and ships; both turbine and reciprocating engine powered.

The entire project is in mothballs now. (I lost my domain name, and the entire project is in need of a software upgrade.) But, there was never a whole lot of interest in it anyway.

The steamship scene has been very, very depressing lately. The loss of the steam riverboats is just part of it; all but a tiny few of the remaining steam turbine ocean liners have been broken up in the past few years, along with many of the Great Lakes fleet and the "Ghost Fleet" (yet another very real strategic reserve, now disappearing.) Of the 2853 boats/ships in the last update I built, 156 were scrapped, 62 more were stored awaiting scrap and may have been scrapped now, 50+ were sunk as reefs, as targets by the military, or at their moorings, 135 are derelict remains in shallow water. Much of the remainder of the database are small privately owned steamboats such as steam launches.

If you think Railway Preservation can be depressing, take a look at steamship preservation. Once again, the Brits have us beat with several paddle steamers still in operation; though there are been some depressing developments there as well. Good thing we still have museums such as the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park of which Ted is a part; musuems like these may soon be the only places we will find steamships anymore.
