Santa Fe Collection

Can anyone tell me what was included in the Santa Fe collection that wound up at CSRM? It seems they have disposed of some peices to other homes recently (The FM and a Alco switcher). I'm curious what was in the collection and how much exists and where.

Not equipment, but the Santa Fe had a large amount of supporting items for the collection: drumheads, furniture, signs, china, books, etc. most of that stuff was auctioned off in a big auction in Topeka back in the late 1980's.

Santa Fe shipped out a box car of drawings and documents from Topeka shops and these are part of the CSRM Library collection. Some of these (I'm not sure how much %) are listed on the on-line database. Some of these are the original stencil drawings for car side lettering; the passenger car letterboard "SANTA FE" is a 1906 "ink on linen" drawing.

The locomotives are the ones that the company had set aside and stored at Albuquerque.

The CSRM list is dated, as the M-190 went back to Albequerque (sic) and the FM H 12-44 has just been shipped to IRM. I also believe one of the Alco switchers has gone elsewhere, but I am not certain of that.

At least they are trying to make their collection fit their resources, no comment on the how or why that led up to this point.

By most accounts, these locomotives, and in particular the steam locomotives, were in excellent shape at the time of donation. Apparently the location where CSRM decided to store them was not safe, and the engines have been heavily vandalized. Can anyone verify or bust those ideas?

Couple of comments:

1. Yes, the CSRM list is dated. But, it does tell you what they had received from ATSF which was part of the original question.

Maybe others can help fill in the current locations.

2. The storage site was within the SP Sacramento shops and yard complex which was not particularly secure. And the equipment suffered and copper, etc. went missing. Nothing more to say, unless you want to "whip a dead horse."

The S-2 2381 has gone to a railroad museum in Campo California on the former San Diego & Arizona Eastern

The 0-4-0, "Little Buttercup" has been given to the San Jose group with operates the streetcars in Kelly Park and owns the 4-6-2 SP Pacific and 0-6-0...

CSRM has recently given many pieces away to good homes... Our group got a 1890's NPC/NS/NWP narrow gauge caboose, a 4 wheel steel side dump and the mortal remains of a West Side Lumber log car.

It seems we are on the edge of a paragim shift... with many pieces of equipment moving to new homes...

Built in 1899 as a 0-4-0T, LBC originally operated in San Francisco, only 45 miles up the peninsula from San Jose. Later, it operated as a roundhouse/shop switcher in Needles, CA. This item fits nicely into our long range plans for a roundhouse museum.

Since its use at the Chicago Railfair, the locomotive has been primarily stored inside for nearly 60 years; as a result, continued indoor storage was a CSRM criteria for donation. LBC is currently displayed in our trolley barn at Kelley Park.
