That engine is a Davenport 0-4-0 formerly of Otto Chemical. It is personally owned by Earl Pardini, the CMRR president.

For background, there is an article on the acquisition of this locomotive in the Winter 2002 issue of the ESRM's Telegraphed Dispatch on p.9:

http://www.esrm.com/esrm/pdf/winter2002.pdf

Here is a photo of the wheels:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 037109.jpg

All the parts, including the saddle tank, are in the CMRR's Cornell Street Yard.

Thanx for the quick reply. That seems like an unusual shaped boiler for an 0-4-0t. I thought it was from an early Heisler. Any thoughts why the firebox is so large and the smokebox so small? I have seen plans of similar sized locomotives where there were wagon topped fireboxes, but not so pronounced.

The CMRR ran its summer shuttle in Kingston for the last time yesterday. Here is a video crossing Washington Avenue:

Here is another of the ride from Fair Street to Washington Avenue and back:

The Shuttle will be back in November and December for the holiday season. In the meantime, we will be extending the track further west and doing maintenance on the 401.

Finally, here is an interesting tribute to the CMRR I found on the internet:

Friday, September 4th

On Friday, September 4th, Earl Pardini and Gary Lowe finished rebuilding the traction motor on the CMRR 29's No. 2 truck. The engine should be back in service next week.

Saturday, September 5th

From Al Johnson, on the coach 702 project:

"Terry W. and Gary Lowe wire brushed the air tanks for the brake system and applied a coat of primer paint. Gary and I wire brushed the West end vestibule and Gary painted the floor and West end structural steel. We then completed the prep of the cabinet doors for the electrical cabinet and the cabinet at the West end of the car, plus the bathroom door. Ed Palmatier finished the installation of the bathroom window and the adjacent window and then installed all of the arm rests we have."

Also in Phoenicia, George Peck led a crew consisting of Greg Peck, Michael Adsit, and Dave Mason, who did maintenance work on the Kalamazoo so it could be used as a back-up in case of problems with the train.

Saturday, September 12th:

In Phoenicia, George Peck took out a crew that regraded some of the creekside ROW between MP 23 and MP 24. The crew included Greg Peck, Mark Glaser, Jason DiTolla, Michael Adsit and Dave Mason. They smoothed out sections of the ROW where culvert work has been done this year.

Also in Phoenicia, Terry W. and George Liucci installed 2 of the air tanks for the brake system. George worked on the West end vestibule and the air brake system. Al Johnson put a prime coat on the cabinet and bathroom doors and George Bain and Ed Palmatier worked on cleaning the seats and fitting them to the frames.

Joe Klapkowski started preparing the roof of transfer caboose 697 for new paint as part of a repaint of the whole caboose.

Also on Saturday, Earl Pardini and Mike LaLonde worked on No. 29.

Saturday evening, the annual volunteer party was attended by over 40 volunteers, their friends and families.

Sunday, September 13th

On Sunday, Earl Pardini led a small crew Sunday consisting of Mark Glaser and Bob Blake, and loaded 120 of the new shipment of ties onto flat 202, and took it to the end of track. Afterwards, they spiked up about 30 previously tamped ties. The operable track was extended from MP 4.6 to MP 4.63 or so. Only .36 miles left to reach the bridge at MP 4.99.

Friday, September 18th.

On Friday, September 18th, Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of Thom Johnson, Joe Klapkowski, and Dave Hilliard who worked west of the Holiday Inn. They inserted 14 more ties, taking our track with ties inserted (but not tamped or spiked) from MP 4.68 to MP 4.70. They also pulled spikes from 62 ties, and marked out ties all the way to the Thruway at MP 4.84.

Saturday, September 19th

George Peck, Derek Stapleton and Dave Mason took the gradall to between MP 23 and 24, and continued smoothing out the creekside ROW as required. In the afternoon, they spent time diagnosing problems with the high-rail dump truck in the Phoenicia Yard.

The 702 crew consisted of Terry W., Ed Palmatier, George Liucci, Ernie Gehrer, Dick Wilhelm and Al Howes. Al Howes came to provide technical support and guidance for the brake assembly. 702 now has shoes and the big air tank was put in place. Ed and Ernie removed the clamps that were restraining the springs on the east end of the coach. They also started to install the brake rigging. George also did some finishing work on the east end of the coach and applied a sample of the black roof stuff that is expected to be used on the roof of 702 and probably on 701 as well.

Also near Phoenicia, Chris Bigham and I worked on Campground Curve on Saturday. Here are some photos:

The Route 28 side is now pretty clear. But there is much work to do on the creekside.

In Kingston, Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of Bob Blake, Mark Glaser, Thom Johnson and Ron Epstein, and inserted another 47 ties, taking our track with ties inserted (but not tamped or spiked) from MP 4.7 to MP 4.73. They removed spikes and plates all the way to the Thruway at MP 4.84.

Sunday, September 20th

On Sunday, Earl Pardini led a crew at Cornell Street yard including Ernie Klopping, John Patane, Al Schoessow, and Jeff Otto. They weed-wacked the entire yard, made repairs to the air wrench, and moved the Davenport boiler off the dock to another location in the yard.

Friday, September 25:

On Friday, Earl Pardini, Al Schoessow, and Mark Glaser performed track inspection and repair between Elmendorf Street and Chandler Drive.

Saturday, September 26th:

In Phoenicia, the 702 crew continued work. Terry W. installed some additional parts for the air brake system while Ed Palmatier and Al Johnson worked on the seats. Ed lubricated each of the seat back swivel systems before installing the seats while Al cleaned additional seat bottoms and seat backs. They have 10 more seats to clean, modify and install. After installing the air brake parts, Terry also assisted with cleaning seats.

Also in Phoenicia, George Peck, Dave Mason and Paul Sternitzke made repairs to the Sleepy Hollow crossing.

In Kingston, Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of Al Schoessow, Mark Glaser, Ron Epstein, Bob Blake, John Tuma, George Cook, and Dave Hilliard who put the tamper in service. They plated, spiked and tamped about 20 ties from MP 4.63 to about MP 4.66, and plated 50-60 more ties to the signal box at MP 4.73. Earl inserted about 14 more ties from MP 4.73 to the first private crossing at MP 4.75, and the crew pulled spikes and plates all the way to the Thruway at MP 4.84.

Ernie,

Thanks for the updates. It's great to see progress continually being made. That bridge at MP 5, is it structurally sound or is it washed out like some of the others? The vegetation was rather intense thus limiting your photo options, so I was curious. You guys seem to be really making a nice operation up there.

Best,

Michael,

Our bridge at MP 5, designated C-9, is structurally sound. Main problem is many rotted bridge timbers, as well as rotted blocks of wood that the girder part of the bridge sits on. We will first do temporary repairs (replace about a dozen bridge timbers) for equipment moves, then evaluate a full repair later. Vegetation looks worse in the photos than it is in person.

You'll see this project posted during the later winter and spring of 2010. We have equipment stored west of C-9 that we need to retrieve and bring back to Cornell Street yard.

Best,

Ernie Hunt
