Lots of younger folks might have something to say about that.

Well, mounted on a railroad car, I might say that it does. But sitting on the ground by itself....I would still say, no.

Greg, I sent you a PM about the 50-foot door and a half boxcars, but I'm not sure my PM's are going out. If you do not receive the PM please respond and send photos to ssyfrettatgmaildotcom. Thanks.

Regarding containers for storage, maybe modern containers do not have the "railroad atmosphere", but there are some railroad-owned containers around that would. There is a Southern container in the NS yard here in Albany that would be perfect for storage if I could get it donated and moved. Ah, there's that "if" factor again...

We did speak with several container companies. And with all of the containers stacked next to the Turnpike, you would think that getting your hands on one would be easy but it wasn't. Now I have to tell you here that I wasn't involved with those negotiations. And our thoughts were to put it on trucks to make it look like a rail car because the local authorities have already nixed a container laying on the ground. I know, what's up with that? In all fairness, it must have something to do with the historic nature of the site. But through this site and it's membership, we have located a car. It's good to know that you can rely on some to help when the call goes out.

Later!

It's here! We have a beautifully restored 1959 Rock Island PS-1 on our tracks!

I first want to publicly thank Robert John Davis for his help in acquiring this beauty! He knew a gentleman at the PA RR museum who knew a gentleman that had a car that he needed to get rid of, quickly. I also want to thank Jim Kovach for this fine restoration.

Our hauler picked the car up Monday at noon and dropped it and the trailer with the trucks in our yard at 5:00 PM. Then Tuesday morning at 7:00 AM the mover arrived with his two trailers and one huge forklift. The snow had been plowed but the sun did us in as the ground defrosted into a quagmire! The hauler had to get steel plates to put down to complete the move which they finished by 5:00 PM. It made for a long day. But except for a little salt spray from the roads, she looks good. She is the crown jewel of our collection. But I forgot my camera, again. I will remember and take some photos next time up there.

Thanks again Rob and Jim. Without you two, we'd still be looking for a box car.

Later!
Mr. Ed

One of our volunteers put photos on www.railfan.net. Click on Tourist Railroads and Museums and then again and scroll down to The Pemberton Township Historic Trust. For the record, I am the guy with the beard in the grey hooded shirt pushing the truck in under the car. No, I am not the uni-bomber!

Happy Holidays to one and all!

Later!

Joe -

You can get there, but you have to click on "The Railfan.net Forum" first.

Mr. Ed -

The photos show that the boxcar looks great with a beautiful paint job, but is not yet lettered for the Rock Island. I have seen a color photo of a sister car and the lettering scheme really will make a terrific difference in the cars future appearance. The original lettering included a large DF2 in yellow (the rest of the lettering is in white). I am not sure where you can go to get the lettering diagram including the Rock Island herald, but perhaps the Rock Island Technical Society might be your first stop.

Good luck on the future lettering project. The car is a wonderful addition to your collection. BTW, perhaps you can list your collection of other railroad equipment sometime. I didn't see it on the PTHT website and it is obvious in the photos, that your group has other equipment.

Thanks Gary for the link. If you follow the link and go back to the first page, you can see our entire collection. We have:

1923 Tidewater tank car.
NX23 caboose.
N5c caboose.
N6b caboose chassis (it was almost a caboose, the roof was gone, but it was my first project so now it is just a primed and painted chassis.)
CNJ narrow body caboose.

The above are all from separate sources.

From Roebling steel:
100 ton GE centercab diesel.
Hopper car.
Gondola.
Flat car.

We have our eyes on a few other pieces but at this time we are in debt to pay off the boxcar move. So any further acquisitions will have to wait.

Lettering will probably get done this summer. Jim Kovach, the car's restorer did a fine job and didn't spare any expense including the paint. She looks a little dirty but that can be washed off when the weather warms up.

Later!
Mr. Ed
