Thursday, October 1st

Joe Klapkowski continued work on caboose 697 in Phoenicia. He completed the roof repairs and then scraped and primed one half of the south side of the caboose.


Friday, October 2nd

Earl Pardini and Al Schoessow worked on braking piping for coach 702.


Saturday, October 3rd

On Saturday, our crews were mostly cancelled in Phoenicia due to rain, though Terry W. installed the last armrests in the 702.

In Kingston, the track crew consisted of Earl Pardini, Bob Blake, Dave Hilliard, Mark Glaser and Al Schoessow. Earl inserted 34 ties and the crew spiked 43 from MP 4.66 to MP 4.71.


Sunday, October 4th

On Sunday, the track crew consisted of Earl Pardini, Mark Glaser, Dave Hilliard, Al Schoessow, John Tuma, Ernie Klopping and George Cook. Earl inserted 15 ties east of the Trailways crossing at MP 4.89. The crew plated 48 ties from MP 4.73 to MP 4.78, and the crew spiked 38 ties from MP 4.71 to MP 4.75.

Monday, October 5th

Joe Klapkowski is planning to continue work priming CMRR transfer caboose 697 in the Phoenicia yard on Monday, October 5th starting at 9am. If the work is not completed Monday, he will be back Tuesday at 9am to finish up.


Friday, October 9th

Extra volunteers are needed in Mt. Pleasant starting at 10am.


Saturday, October 10th

In Phoenicia, George Peck will be organizing a crew to repair sags in the track at MP 23.3. They will leave Phoenicia early, about 8am to get maximum worktime before train operations start for the day.

The 702 crew will start promptly at 10am, working on seats, brakes, and painting the final coat on the east end of the car.

Extra volunteers are needed in Mt. Pleasant starting at 1pm.


Sunday, October 11th.

George Peck will be in Phoenicia starting at 9:30am.

Extra volunteers are needed in Mt. Pleasant starting at 1pm.


Monday, October 12th

George Peck will be in Phoenicia starting at 9:30am.

Friday, October 16th

Earl Pardini plans to have a workday on Friday, October 16th. Plans are to meet at Cornell Street yard at 9am, do work on the 401, and possibly trackwork near the Thruway.


Saturday, October 17th

In Phoenicia, George Peck will be organizing a crew to repair track from Phoenicia to Mt. Pleasant. They will leave Phoenicia early, about 8am to get maximum worktime before train operations start for the day.

Dave Mason and Derek Stapleton plan to work on the hi-rail dump truck in the Phoenicia yard.

The 702 crew will start at 10am, working on seats, brakes, and painting the final coat on the east end of the car.

Additional volunteers are needed to tend the crowds at Mt. Pleasant starting at 10am.

Earl Pardini plans to continue trackwork in Kingston on Saturday inserting more ties, and tamping and spiking track with our renovated tamper. Crews should meet at Cornell Street at 9am or near the Trailways crossing by the Thruway at about 9:30-10am.

Friday, October 16th

On Friday the 16th, Earl led a crew inserting ties in Kingston, including Al Schoessow and John Patane. They inserted 20 ties and tamped 40.


Saturday, October 17th

In Phoenicia, George Peck and Dave Mason worked on repairing the hi-rail dump truck:

We still have to finish the brakes and put the final coat of paint on the east end.

The tracks are now fully spiked and tamped up to the signal base at MP 4.72. The tracks are fully tamped and plated (but not spiked) from MP 4.72 to MP 4.76. About 20 ties need to be inserted from MP 4.76 to 4.78. From 4.78 to the Thruway at MP 4.84 ties have been inserted but not spiked or tamped.

Sunday, October 18th.

On Sunday, Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of Ernie Klopping, Mark Glaser and Al Schoessow and Joe Marsh who continued cleanup of the Cornell Street yard. They relocated the Davenport boiler off the dock, so the dock is now completely clear. Al amd Joe worked on the tamper.

It was signalled from Kingston to Phoenicia from around the turn of the century until the NYC took over in 1932.

Never knew that. 77 years already removed. Shows you just what kind of traffic the Catskills had back then!

I'm guessing all that's left is the stray foundation here and there?

Most of the signal bases, and many of the battery boxes remain. We have placed signs on some of them with their official designations.

Yes, the first part is from MP 2.8 to 3.5 or so. Two of the three tell-tales are still there. We worked on that section of the line in 2007. The ESRM has a longer version of the same film that shows more.

Monday, October 19th

On Monday, October 19th, Ed Palmatier continued work on the seats on Coach 702.

Wednesday, October 21st

On Wednesday, October 21st, Ed Palmatier and Al Johnson continued work on the 702 seats. Al also painted the grab irons on the west end of the 702 yellow.

Thursday, October 22nd

On Thursday, October 22nd, Joe Marsh, Al Schoessow and Dick Wilhelm completed repairs on the tamper.


On Saturday, October 24th

In Phoenicia, Ed Palmatier worked on the remaining seats on the 702.

Also in Phoenicia, George Peck, Greg Peck, Dave Mason and Michael Adsit worked on the interior of the section house, getting it close to its new function as a shop for Phoenicia.

In Kingston, Bob Blake worked (in heavy rain) removing all the remaining spikes and plates for marked ties between the Trailways Crossing and the C9 bridge.

Also in Kingston Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of Mark Glaser, John Patane and Al Schoessow, and changed the oil in the 401 and put up new shelving in the box car.


Sunday, October 25th

In Kingston, Earl Pardini led a crew consisting of Al Schoessow, Mark Glaser, Todd Syska, Ron Epstein and Mimi Pardini. They spiked and fully tamped 65 ties between MP 4.72 and MP 4.78, bringing the operating track up to the private crossing at MP 4.78. Earl inserted 20 ties between MP 4.76 and MP 4.78, and another 8 under the Thruway bridge. Ties are now fully inserted between MP 4.78 and MP 4.84, but still need to be plated, tamped and spiked. About 30-40 more ties need to be inserted to reach the Trailways crossing at MP 4.89.

Saturday, October 31st.

On Saturday, Thom Johnson, Gary Lowe and Al Johnson continued work on the 702. There is only one seat left to install, so they worked on finishing the cabinet doors and starting work on the luggage racks.

In Phoenicia, George Peck led a crew consisting of Greg Peck and Michael Adsit. They continued work on the conversion of the Phoenicia section house into a shop.

Chris Bigham and I did brush cutting around the Phoenicia station.

In Kingston, Earl led a crew consisting of Al Schoessow, Bob Blake, George Bain, Mike LaLonde, Mark Glaser, Raphael DeMeglio, and Ron Epstein. They continued inserting, spiking and tamping track. Finished track was extended from MP 4.78 to MP 4.80, and ties were inserted from the center of the Thruway to the western end. Ties are fully plated and partially tamped from MP 4.80 to 4.82, the east end of the Thruway bridge. About 18 ties are left to insert from MP 4.86 to 4.89, the Trailways crossing. A bad rail was replaced near the Holiday Inn.

Sunday, November 1st

On Sunday, November 1st, Earl Pardini led a crew continuing the C9 extension which included Ernie Klopping, Raphael DeMeglio, Mark Glaser, Al Schoessow and Gary Lowe.

They tamped and spiked the track from MP 4.80 to 4.82 (the eastern end of the Thruway bridge) and Earl inserted 7 more ties from MP 4.86 to MP 4.87, just short of the Trailways crossing at MP 4.89. Earl and Ernie Klopping also spent some time at the Cornell Street yard working on the 401.
