We have several dozen small product samples from Youngstown Sheet and Tube. These were found in an abandoned office building, are made of steel and aside from some surface rust are in good condition. I would like to remove the rust and apply a costing that would prevent further corrosion. The idea I had would be to use naval jelly to remove the rust, and I heard somewhere about using a wax to coat the metal. My question is, what kind of wax is reccomended and where can it be obtained. I would rather not use the high priced products sold by conservator supply houses if a suitable consumer product is available.

Honestly I can't recommend naval jelly but I can recommend penetrol for a good clear protective coating. It will soak into any pits and seal them.

Penetrol is a "Quality Paint Conditioner" comes in an orange can and is found at Lowes and hardware stores.
It is also a conditioner for rusty steel. If you wire brush or needlescale the loose rust off and give the metal a "saturating coat" of penetrol it will keep the surface from rusting. If you mix it with your primer it will smooth it out and act as a leveler.

Hi G.E.,

I have a question about Penetrol that, hopefully, you can answer. I have a house with a metal roof. The house is over 100 years old and the roof is getting pretty rusty in some rather impressive sized spots. I have no wish to replace the roof, as it is original to the house. Will this Penetrol stuff work to kill the rust on my roof and is it something that would be prohibitively expensive? Also, what would be the best way to use it in this situation. My husband keeps telling me that all we have to do is sand off all the remaining loose stuff and hit the roof with a coat of Alumacoat. Somehow, I just don't think this is a very long lasting way to do it and I could use some suggestions. I realize this is way off topic but I'm getting desperate and nobody around here, even the professionals that want to charge me $5000.00, really know how to care for my poor old antique.HELP
